St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

My first visit to St Albans and what a lovely city! So much to see and do. The Cathedral was breathtaking and well worth a visit. Make sure you pre-book the cathedral tour online is my advice. It's very popular.

There's so much to see in this building. The architecture ranges from Romanesque early Norman, through Medieval to modern. The Medieval wall-paintings on the columns are well preserved and very evocative, as are the wonderful modern statues to martyrs (including Bonhoeffer and Oscar Romero) on the new organ screen. There's always lots going on, yet it still feels like a... More

Wonderful and very interesting tour with tons of history. The guide was excellent. We had snacks in the cathedral kitchen and who knew, it was where they invented the Hot Cross Bun! So of course it would be rude not to partake. It was spring so lots of lovely daffodils around.

Beautiful Abbey, wonderful wall paintings. Always enjoy a walk around Verulamium park as well. The tourist office could probably make more of the city but that may spoil it for us living here

An interesting place with lots of hidden parts. The choir was practising, which was nice. Being told how much to donate is a no-no from me.

One of the UK's major heritage sites, St Alban's Cathedral is a marvel in architecture. Spend about an hour or two just going around the whole complex and checking out the little nooks and crannies that make up the cathedral. There was a wedding going on while we were there, which added to the magical ambience of the place

My first visit to this very beautiful cathedral. It is so full of history. It is also a very peaceful, spiritual place. I was in a party and had a guided tour. Our guide, Kate was brilliant keeping her commentary just at the right level. Our tour went all too quickly. There are a lot of beautiful artefacts and pictures... More

My husband and I have not been to the Abbey for years so decided another viewing would be good. It is the most amazing place in architecture design I have ever seen. How did they build and sculpture and carve all the most wonderful pillars, ceilings, walls the Altar is mind boggling the way it is carved. Wonderful wonderful place.... More

Definitely worth visiting, would like to arrange a tour sometime and learn more about the history. It's the home of the original hot cross bun apparently!
