Just go. It’s such an unusual church, totally about and for the sailors of the fishing port of Ramsgate. We stumbled across it years ago and always look in when passing by. Don’t expect grand, blousy or huge. Just think of simple and much needed in days gone by. Dont forget to leave a donation as they have to keep it going.....even though you won’t necessarily be there for long

Smack boys were those employed on the fishing smack going out of Ramsgate many years ago. The Church is a small oasis amongst the yachts at the edge of the quay. The inside is very quiet and welcoming and as a local resident I often just call in to experience the atmosphere.

This is a lovely little church on the harbour front. Upstairs apprentice fisherlads (smack boys) were given a home and occasional shipwrecked sailors lodged there too.
The inside of the church itself is charming, with lovely models of ships and boats and a truly peaceful atmosphere. Heartily recommended as a lovely place to get a sense of old Ramsgate.

If, like myself, you are interested in the history of the Second World War, you must visit the Sailors Church. During the 1940 Dunkirk evacuations, this church was used as a hospital/first aid/food distrubution centre for the British (and other nationalities) troops who returned to Britain through Ramsgate in a flotilla of small boats - many of these boats from Ramsgate itself. It may seem a little uninteresting at first sight, but just go there, sit down and feel the history - It's well worth a visit.

Put very simply: this place is free
If you are in Ramsgate then it would be foolish not to visit this small church
It is clearly nautically based and it is that which makes it different and worth a visit
The time required is probably no more than 20-30 minutes

The church is small, right on the harbour. I found it by accident but was very happy I did. I don't usually go in for church visiting yet it was very appropriate as it's right on a working harbour next to the harbour master office. It appears to be open most of the time, which was amazing as there didn't appear to be anyone around. I wouldn't say you must see it but, pop in if your passing.

The church contains lots of maritime memorabilia such as model boats and pictures, which are interesting if you are into history or that kind of thing.

Having lived in Ramsgate practically all my life I'm ashamed to say it was only recently I visited this lovely little church. For visitors and locals alike it is well worth a visit. I would be interested to know if couples can marry there, the photos would certainly be beautiful with the harbour as a backdrop. As it is so small its probably not worth coming to Ramsgate just to see the church but as part of a visit its just a few minutes walk from the town centre with the bars and cafes surrounding the harbour also within minutes.

It is beautiful & atmospheric ..Opened in 1878 .The church is a Grade II listed building. & was used as a dormitory for survivors from shipwrecks. It's still a working church. Super artefacts.
Church opening times:
Daily all year. From mid June to end of September you can have coffee in the church from 10am to 4pm. We're sure you won't regret it. It's also a gig venue. We picked up a flyer for Preston Reed who is "..widely thought of as the world's most gifted guitarist." (Total Guitarist) It's on the 16th October 2015. We just stumbled upon it...

I went there as a kid when was in the scouts but not had been in the church itself so I thought it would be a great idea to see it and I loved it.
