What can be said about this mountain? It has been my easy route on many occasions for a quick blast up and down via Scales, and also a slot in poor weather. It is close to 'route 66' which means no walk in, is isolated from the more common routes and has just got so much to offer with views... More

We have been to the lakes many times but never climbed blencathra until today, and after doing so can see why it is so popular. There are many routes to the summit but we took one that required no precarious traverses although you do climb 700 metres in the first 3 KM so it isn't to be treated lightly. The... More

Blencathra was always going to be high on our 'must walk' list, taunting us on every trip up the A66 to the Lakes. We checked three separate weather forecasts - including the local Mountain forecast - and they promised a sunny, dry day with chance of cloud free summits at 95%, too good to resist. Our walk started at Mungrisdale,... More

There are many ways of ascending and descending this iconic fell close to the main road near Keswick. From the adventure (short lived ) of sharp north east edge which is a little more necky in winter conditions to one of the softer rising longer ridges facing south and the road. You can make plenty of cirque or horsehoe routes... More

We climbed Blencathra with our two young children and we all loved the experience. Our children are regular fell walkers and found the ascent quite straightforward (although lots of winding paths which seem never ending!). The weather took a turn for the worse once we reached the summit so we descended quickly but the views on the way up were... More

If you've tried Sharp Edge I thoroughly recommend Hall's Fell Ridge. Not as sharp but a beautiful walk with a nice bit of scrambling along the top. Wonderful views across the valley and down into Gate and Doddick Gills. The return via Doddick Fell was pretty easy but a nice way down with great views across the valley to Great... More

Started this morning in the muzzle... The first 2 mile climb almost did for me, but the cloud cleared and the views were really spectacular. Nature at it's best !!

Have climbed this mountain more than 10 times now starting back in 1992 and it remains one of my favourite summits. It has almost everything a mountain walker looks for in a mountain climb - quick and easy access to the mountain, exhilarating ridges for assent and descent where you need both hands and feet, a plentiful choice of routes,... A friend and i decided to walk up Blencathra. We arrived at 09.00 and despite it being very mild and quite humid the cloud was low over the mountain. As we ascended the mountain the clouds rose and the views became spectacular. As we got near the top the "walk" became a bit of a climb and not for the... More
