Lake Windermere ends around one mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town.

But don't worry!

There is an Electric Bus that take you into the centre of Ambleside. It is well worth the trip.

The bus stops next to the world famous; Ambleside Sheepskins. If you decide to pop in to Ambleside Sheepskins, you might be lucky and bump into the odd celebrity or two shopping. Anything Sheepskin can be found in there 2 high street shops, boasting the best selection of sheepskin slippers, sheepskin rugs, cowhide rugs, reindeer skins in the UK. As well as the Local Herdwick Sheepskin rugs. They also offer to post your goods if you can not carry them back home with you.

If you walk a further 300 yards up the road you will come across the best deli in the village, Stockghyll Fine Foods, takeaway pies, sandwiches & sweets - highly recommended!

For walking and outdoor gear visit Cunninghams around the corner.

Cunningham's was established in 1971 by Stewart Cunningham, an Ambleside lad who spent his early years on the fells in the Lake District.  He opened the Ambleside store to meet the needs of the many walkers drawn to the Lakes.  He has watched the technology evolve over the years from Ventile jackets and canvas rucksacks to the advent of Gore-tex and other fabric technologies.

Cunningham's now has six stores across England, Scotland and Wales.

Very pleased with every aspect of our very comfortable stay, down to the delicious daily complimentary Grasmere gingerbread, a wide range of DVDs you can borrow, the filter coffee and ice bucket in the room, the evening turn down service with chocolate miints and the White Company and Bath House toiletries... A very convenient location as well; the car didn't... More

Good place to visit for 'walking and hiking' shops, tea rooms and local fare. I liked the 'smallest house' situated on the right as you enter the village

The promenade has been newly renovated and is a lovely spot to sit and watch the world go by and watch the launches come and go and an especially nice to watch the sun go down . This is where you will find the quay is for the Lake Windermere cruises. Here you will find a couple of pleasant little... More

Many shops were getting the facia painted, parking was expensive I think it was £5 for three hours. not many general shops but what do you expect in a climbing/walking environment. Hustling and bustling a good atmosphere.

The Waterside itself is a small area but worth starting off here for a drink overlooking the lake before taking the short walk into Ambleside including Bents Nursary. If you go on a Saturday you can visit the small market . If you want to buy walking gear, there are many specialist shops and prices are competitive. You have a... More

The Waterhead is quite a small area and can get very busy. It's about 10 minutes walk from the Centre of Ambleside. The main attraction of this Attraction are the Ferries that depart from the small pier, and other pleasure-craft that can be hired for those who want to mess-about-in-boats on Windermere. If you want to appreciate the view out... More

Never eaten here but love to go for a drink and sit in the beer garden. The view across Windermere at sunset is fantastic!
