As ever another memory laden trip. Love this place. Can't be many truly wet pubs still surviving in 2017 but the Rule seems to manage. Fuelled by a wide range of well kept Cumbrian ales, coal fire, shaggy carpets, low key conversation laden atmosphere (no music/TV etc) and relaxed authentic environment we will keep coming again and again. Don't come... More

I would not class this pub as dog friendly we sat in the so called beer garden which is just a few tables and chairs on the concrete round the back of the pub a lady came out of the back door and startled our dogs and they started barking, we apologised to the lady and we're calming our dogs... I always like to pop in here for a pint or two on trips from Liverpool. It's a proper old-fashioned pub with good beer.

We love this pub for a number of reasons. No TV, no music, the only food is scotch eggs and pork pies, no children after 9pm, great choice of beers that are very well kept, a lovely open fire on chilly days and all with a friendly welcome. There is also a small back yard for when the sun shines!... More

Been coming the Golden Rule for many years on our trips to the lake district. Our kids insist we go so that they can play numerous board games in the family room. As they have up to 8 real ales on, kept impeccably, it would be rude not to. A proper inn and long may it remain so.

Walked past this pub every day from where we are staying. Read the sign saying no children after 9pm. Popped in for a quick pint with 12 year old. Many choices of draught beers. Although it was only 7.45pm we were told that "young ones" can't stay in the main bar. So we went in side room which was fine,... More

I visited the Golden Rule for the first time in a quarter of a century. It was the best pub in town then & it still is. It's a friendly place - the staff and locals all fit this description. There is no music and no foot (apart from Scotch Eggs or Pork Pies). The reason most people go there... More

I am a huge fan of the Lake District and fell walk regularly and always enjoy a pint after a long day but Ambleside has always been a bit of a "beer desert" to me,until this week. The Golden Rule upholds all the quintessential factors of a British pub, warm, cozy, friendly,no food and a good selection of beers. It makes a change to... More
