This April I fulfilled a long-held ambition to walk up the Old Man of Coniston. On a fine day we drove up the road to the car park at it's foot (free but unmaintained - very potholey and bumpy!). From the start to the finish the views are unbelievable and we stopped several times to take photos. The start of... More

We first climbed the Swirl How and followed the path to old man of Coniston. It is possible to extend the walk to Dow Craig. You can enjoy panoramic views of the water of Coniston, low waters, reservoir and the sea from the top. The path to the old man of Coniston is very strenuous so if you want to... More

A classic walk in the Lakes with superb view over the Lakes on Morecambe bay. A challenging and pretty steep climb along the old mines but a rewarding view at the top. Accessible to all - even keen children.

Great view across to Dow Cragg, and lovely walk across, still ice even today in the sun :) be sure to take warm clothes and a map just in case the clouds come in.

Starting from the centre of Coniston the first part of the walk (to the car park) is about a mile and very steep. We walked up via the old slate workings and descended the other side. Quite a few people including youngsters making the climb. You have to carefully pick you way up some steep slate stairways to get to... More

Brilliant weather, long hike up the old man. Fab. Take some snacks for the way. Pit stop a low water, good spot to recharge the batteries for the final push.

Conquered the old man with my father in law and my little dog. Weather was perfect which made it that much better. It needs a bit of effort getting up, but it is worth the hard work. Views are amazing and the pint at the end is even better.

Great day walking . Mid fifties and not so fit but took my time and got to the top. Well worth it. View was great. I parked at the bottom station car park but there is another free one further up the hill at the start of the walk 👍👍

I did the whole circuit walk with my dad and partner in June 2015. The whole thing took us about 6 hours in total, which included a stop for lunch and a number of rest/exploration stops along the way. We're not particularly seasoned hikers (climbers might be more appropriate in some places!) but still managed the whole thing. It is... More
