About
This quirky building in the heart of Hawkshead displays original watercolours and work by Beatrix Potter, from the National Trust collection. It's the only place you can step inside the famous tales and get up-close to the original illustrations.

The house is very tiny and the lighting is not good at all. Nice to see some of Beatrix Potter's original work but there is not really a lot to see. If you are a real fan of Beatrix Potter I am sure this is really worth a visit. However if you only have a passing interest, I think the entry cost for non NT members and the difficulty parking in Hawkshead when it is busy, it is probably not worth going to.

Basically just a museum. Beatrix Potter was actually from London, not the Lake District, but they seem to milk her legacy here in the LD. The museum was ok, glad we didn’t pay to go in as it wouldn’t be worth it (we have National Trust membership) so got in free as members. They do not allow dogs in though, which I found strange as I believe Beatrix was an animal lover and majority of NT sites allow dogs.

Intresting gallery and informative. Has original watercolours, letters and objects. Staff informative. As other reviews have said it is dark but that is to protect the artifacts. Staff told us what is on display has an 8 year rotation so what you see will only be there again 8 years later! This is not suitable for those with mobility issues.

Unfortunately I got the day of my booking mixed up but the lovely lady squeezed us in. It’s only a small gallery in a very old, wonky cottage. Not suitable for anyone who cannot climb stairs and probably not that suitable for young children. Spent a lovely time admiring the artefacts and drawings, my 11 year old loved it and really added to our afternoon of Beatrice potter, finished off with a cream tea!

The gallery has themes for consevation reasons so that different material is on show for a season and then conserved for a longer period of time. This season it features a number of original letters. I struggled to read them in the light available (purposefully dim for protection?) transcripts would have been helpful. Lots of informations boards put the letters in the context of the various friendships Beatrix formed and the whole display was very informative.

This quaint little house in the middle of Hawkshead displays Beatrix Potter's original watercolours of her books, as well as other information about her life.
If you enjoy her books and have visited Hill Top, this is another interesting place to visit. The guides are helpful and informative.

Beatrix Potter illustrations on display in an extremely old house, which we discovered was the office of her lawyer husband. Apparently he was 6’ which is impressive as the ceilings are incredibly low. Expensive to see if you don’t have NT membership.

Fabulous gallery. Lovely display of history of Beatrix potter. They change it yearly to focus on different likes of Beatrix potter. Will definitely be going back. The children enjoyed learning all about Beatrix. This year was focused on flowers.

Very small gallery containing different exhibitions of Beatrix Potter's work and life. The current exhibition is about communication by letters and was a fascinating insight into some of the correspondence between Beatrix and some of her many fans accros the world and how and why some of the characters came to be. An absolute privilege to see such amazing pieces of history up close.

Last week we visited the Beatrix Potter Gallery Hawkshead...it was one of our best visits to this place. Lots of interesting information about Beatrix Potter.
Nice to see that they have removed the children's play area from upstairs..as that was not suitable for this place... very good wildlife video downstairs.
Staff very friendly.
