Very interesting the just the history of Cumbrian geology and mining was worth the exceptionally low entry prices.(you pay for the museum, mine tour and train separately) Although there could of had a bit more information on the HUGE variety of machines

This is a lovely little place. We have bought a year pass as my boy is obsessed with trains, so we went twice in a week.Steam was running both days I understand it's diesel in quieter periods. There's loads of excavators too as it's home to the vintage excavator trust. The mining museum has lots of information and you could... More

Food mining museu. Enjoyed going into the mine but had hoped for a little more time in the mine in the tour. The museum was good with lots of information to read. Difficult to keep younger children entertained due to the large amouts of reading involved in museum, steam train was good, though very short. Staff very passionate about the... More

I have lived in west cumbria nearly all my life, and have never been here. So me and the wife visited last sunday. When you drive up, you see abandoned pieces of machinery dotted all around. The place is run by volounteers, who have fantastic knowledge and great emotion and enthusiasm for the place. We bought tickets for the museum,... More

Upon recommendation of a fellow hotel guest we made the trip with our 6yo son The mining museum was interesting to us grown ups but not so for the little man. Lots of information about mining in the Lake District but not to capture the imagination of the little fellow. However the underground mine tour was the highlight of his... More

I like this kind of place. It seems to be ran by some nice folk who are enthusiasts rather than businesspeople and so it has a relaxed / slightly chaotic feel. For us (2 adults and 3 kids) it was £10.50 in and £10.50 for the train ride. The museum took about 30-40 mins and had some interesting exhibits -... More

When you enter this place it looks like a Stalag but when you start the visit proper it changes. The welcome is friendly, the Museum fascinating, the trip down the mine is excellent backed up by the Guides enthusiasm and knowledge, you have to wear lighted Pit Helmets to see. Train trip around the Quarry is short but fun and... More

A glimpse into one of the Lakes activities of the past run by enthusiasts. Plenty of old machinery for the kids to climb on.

Went on the steam weekend having researched this on line. Knew the mine would be shut but astonished that the prices had doubled because of the event - no mention of this on the website and chose not to stay because of this.

We went when a steam event was on so the mine was shut but the museum was open and a short train ride to the quarry to see the diggers and draggers in operation and the had a steam dragger working as well, being honest i did think it was a bit pricy for what it was but you can... More
