Neighbourhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.

The staff are friendly, and it does as always have this lovely atmosphere and vibe about it. We sat outside for a bit as there are heaters, and cover but it did get chilly so we managed to get a table inside. My only criticism is the service charge, including when you buy drinks only. Two bottles of wine £80, service charge was on top, around £9. All they did was literally walk the wine to the table, put it down with glasses and walked off. It’s not shown as optional, and they add it on before checking you want to pay it, so it’s a bit of a flaff by that point if you want it removed. Seems to be the new practice up town as had same experience in a few bars post lockdown. So be warned the more expensive your drink the more service charge they add on. serving me the drink I ordered should not come with a charge, let the customer decide if they want to tip for drinks or let me go to the bar and get it myself

Arrived at 11:00am and we were greeted with aggressive staff telling us they were closing. Of course this would have been OK, but they forced our friend through one door away from us, and forced us through another whilst almost shouting for people to get out. We understand that you want to go home but a bit of decency isn't too much to ask for!

The atmosphere is as magical as ever, but be aware that they do not serve any hot food!
We made a first post-Covid return visit and there have been some significant changes. The toilets have been modernised and the bar area has been made more user friendly , but the main change has been the removal of the buffet - style hot food area. This used to provide a tasty selection of chicken, steaks and casseroles but that has now gone. The food menu now consists of cold delicatessen food - salamis, ham, smoked salmon and cheese. Lots of cheese!
The wine list is still superb; so a great place for a drink, but probably not for food!

Gordons is just steps away from the Embankment underground station. You walk down stairs and are led to the table in the back. These tables are in a cave! The lighting gives the feel that the cave is lit by torches. It is dark and mysterious. They have an excellent wine selection by both the bottle and glass. The food is small plates.
It is a great place for a quiet drink in a unique atmosphere. Will definitely return. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how Terry took care of us to get us a table and ensure that we were well taken care of!

Excellent as always. The new seating outside really works. Staff are amazing as always and great to see familiar faces, all smiles and proving great service. Cheese boards are excellent. As for the wines, well they’re exactly why you go to Gordon’s.

Nipped in for a drink mid afternoon. People were queueing down the street to get in.
The service was great and we liked the new way (COVID) of ordering drinks at the table. The waiter takes your order and you pay on his little machine then a couple minutes later another waiter brings the drinks. It sure beats crowding at the bar.

Well I guess you have to go at least once. We went twice. Good but expensive wine. $28 for two small glasses. Was nice and cool inside as it was 30 c outside. Great iconic place.

I have been going to Gordons for over thirty years and have thoroughly enjoyed the choice of wine, the excellent food and the friendliness of the staff (including the wonderful Joan who, sadly, is no longer there to chat to customers and clear glasses).
I took an old friend there yesterday, having praised the establishment as a wonderful place to visit, and was let down in every aspect of our visit. The Sauvignon was warm, the food was over priced - no vegetables or salad because of a "fridge breakdown"but still charged full price, and the staff could barely speak English. Indeed the bar staff seemed more concerned about "singing" along to some techno music emanating from some crappy speaker on the shelf over the wine.
A dreadfully embarrassing experience. Is Gordons now treating its customers with contempt while it pursues the tourist trade?

Possibly the most stressful visit I’ve had on a work night out in a while. We had only been at Gordon’s for 25 minutes on a Wednesday night when we were informed that we would need to finish up outside or move inside (but that there may well not be any room for us) at half 10, aka 50 minutes’ time. So the stress began. Over the next 50 minutes, we were repeatedly reminded that our lovely standing spot on the outside terrace would soon need to be vacated. Even when we had moved inside to the bar at half 10, we were soon strongly encouraged to decanter our wine into plastic cups and if we didn’t finish them in time, to begin drinking them quickly outside. Ten minutes later (once outside) we were then asked to down our drinks and vacate the area so Gordon’s staff could close the gates, even thought they clearly had some VIP customers who were exempt to the rules. I love this bar normally, but on this occasion we were very much treated as second-rate customers.

When is the best time to go and be able to get a seat in the cave?
Written July 22, 2019
It is always rather busy so cannot recommend but go and be prepared to wait a bit. It’s also great to sit in the alley outside!

Does this wine bar have the awful little thick glasses that most so called wine bars have? Or is it actually one of the few that have nice big very thin glasses? A fine wine in an awful glass becomes a not so fine wine. Too many businesses use these awful glasses! Im unsure why if im honest. They are dreadful

hello my friend!!!
the glasses is not sofisticated but the local or site it is single local... i loved it...

Im confused with "1 slide of cheese" on the menu. How much is that?
Written September 3, 2017
Good afternoon and sorry for my late reply ....
The cheese board was courtesy of the Bar, on my visit! However, when you go there ask the Portuguese official called Bruno (he is tall and has a big beard)! When I met him, I was surprised by the positive, by his kindness, to know how to receive visitors and explain the best cheeses to try ... so do not forget to do so, I recommend.

Can you take your teens with you .... No they won't be drinking .... But can we pop in there with them in tow?
Written August 20, 2016
Not sure but as it has a large outside area you could ask if they can hang out with you.
