The area
Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

The Inns of Court are a wonderful collection of buildings that provide housing and offices for barristers. A stunning example of Gothic architecture, London's Inns of Court date back to before the 14th century. It is here that barristers train and traditionally practice. Located conveniently adjacent to the Royal Courts of Justice, the Inns are divided up into Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, Inner Temple and Middle Temple. The Templar Church is a must!

I researched the area on Trip Advisor, and found excellent reviews and suggestions for a self directed walking tour. We had a pleasant afternoon traipsing around the Inns of Court, Lincoln Inns field, stopping at the Sir John Soanes museum, the Royal Courts of Justice, where we stopped to listen to a case, and the Templar Church. Highly recommend taking this historic and interesting walk, either on your own or with a group.

A tour of the old Inns of Court are a great introduction to how England, by way of its common law, came to dominate the globe. Quaint old buildings hide a warren of paths and passageways and quiet gardens just a block from bustling Fleet. And the horse hair wigs live on.

This walking tour of the legal area of London was a trip into history with a very knowledgeable guide. With a little added humour from our guide about various aspects of the legal fraternity you are rewarded with a most interesting walk. An area of London you would never know about unless you were shown with a guide.

We joined a tour of the Inns of Court, and the next day returned to spend more time there. The gardens are lovely in May. We looked round the Temple Church, very interesting, and attended a talk that was happening that day, given by the priest of the church. In warmer weather the Garden Room restaurant has outside seating, a very pleasant place to sit, with coffee, sandwiches, breakfast items etc. There is an entrance from the Embankment which is almost hidden.

hard to believe this is in central London,so peaceful.a wonderful place to leave the noise of the city.being short of time we restricted our visit to the temple church.set in the Holborn area it is a lttle hard to find but if you travel along fleet street look for a door with middle temple above it, looks like the entrance to apartments but don't be fooled follow the passage and you exit in the courts.the church is on the left direct ahead.there is a £3 entrance fee(well worth it).built by the knights templars in 1185 there are effigies of the knight crusaders and king john, the stories of the templars the magna carta & 1st world war.strolling around the church there is a wonderful feeling of history about the whole place, after your visit there is a lovely garden to sit and rest.
