Neighbourhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

- hkghatoraeGlasgow, United Kingdom95 contributionsFab views but over ratedVisited The Shard with my brother & his wife. It was something I wanted to tick off as having done. The viewing gallery was shut as it is open to the public only on some days. We decided to go up to the bar. There was a security check, similar to airport. On first sight, entry to the bar was very glam. The views were fantastic. Drinks are over priced & extremely expensive. The cheapest glass of wine was ÂŁ14 & it was awful. There was only one ladies toilet working in the bar area. Not something you would expect in such a glam looking place. Anyway, have seen it, done it. Won't be going again. I had a much better experience having alcoholic drinks & free nuts etc.. at Harvey Nicks. It was classierVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 6, 2023
- Sabrina MWorld1 contributionNo PrivacyWe booked the "Iconic view" room at the Shard for our honeymoon. It was during the holidays, so the hotel was decorated very beautifully! The hotel room was very clean and had a beautiful view. My biggest issue with this room is the lack of privacy. Inside the room, it mentions that if you want full privacy, you need to bring the blinds down. This didn't really make sense to me since we are paying so much for the view. We were able to see our neighbors very easily on the ends of our hotel room. Due to the unique shape of the hotel, you basically HAVE to put the blinds down. At night, if your neighbors have their lights on, their WILL be a reflection of them in your room. I really didn't expect our iconic view to include a naked man!!! Not a fun surprise. Overall, the hotel was lovely, however it sucked that we had to keep our blinds down more than half the time and couldn't enjoy the iconic view we paid so much for.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 25, 2023
- Food Critic Food&WineLondon, United Kingdom1 contributionA lick above the rest! With its delicious food and gorgeous views, Ting might be the best restaurant in The Shard. Ting is the restaurant at the Shangri-La hotel, which is located in The Shard. It’s on the 35th floor, and has some stunning views across North and East London. From one part of the restaurant you can see all the way from City of London to Canary Wharf, and then down through to south London.Visited November 2023Travelled on businessWritten November 28, 2023
- Andy K3 contributionsThe best spot for panoramic shots of London.I've been to London 4 times in the last 6 years, and this was the first time I discovered the Shard has a public observation deck. I visited the Shard on a Monday and pre-bought my ticket for a reasonable $32 USD. There isn't a time limit to how long you can stay, so I spent 2 hours walking both levels taking photos and asking lots of questions. Everyone, from the ticket-takers on the bottom floor to the security guards and stewards at the top, was very friendly and helpful. We had a great tour and Q&A with 'Chris.' He did a great job talking about the building, the city, the sights, etc. I came away with a wealth of information after his talk. The weather was overcast but I think I took better photos due to the shadows and changing weather patterns. On a clear day you are supposed to see over 40 miles. Will definitely visit again.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten December 12, 2023
- AJJP1Appleby-in-Westmorland, United Kingdom1,686 contributionsLondon Skyline ticketsOn a very busy pre Xmas Saturday we had 4pm tickets, which were perfect to see the lights over the City as night fell. No huge queues or delays, biggest delays were security checks, but that’s a good thing. The amount of people in there ebbs and flows, as you can stay as long as you like. We had fantastic cocktails, and just marvelledVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 13, 2023
- vivnzWinchester, United Kingdom25 contributionsA very special lunchWe dined in the Hutong restaurant today to celebrate an anniversary. The first happy surprise was to be shown to a window seat. It got better and better. The service was absolutely charming and the food - a set menu of eight courses - was exceptional. The meal was paced perfectly and the views were amazing. No doubt this is real value for money. We felt very welcomed by a team of staff who were discreetly attentive. We loved it.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 14, 2023
- Brad AFort Worth, Texas4 contributionsAmazing London ViewGreat 360°view of London from 69th floor enclosed and semi open air on the 72nd floor. Piano and bar service on 69th. The view from the toilets is supposedly on Instagram often because of the view. Spent a few hours and took lots of pics and selfies to share.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten December 27, 2023
- GB40245 contributionsIt is what it isIt was January so no queuing. Straight up (well, via a lift change) to the 69th floor viewing platform. Fortunately it was a beautiful day so the views were great. Plenty of staff up there guides, bar wait staff etc who were all incredibly engaging and helpful. Sadly, the 72nd floor bar was closed so when the other one got busy, we couldn’t use it. Worst thing of the day was an incredibly officious, female security staff member going around forcing those sitting on the floor with drinks by the windows to stand. 5 minutes later she was back being very rude to a guy who had crouched back down, just to change position. He’d spent a fortune on drinks and just wanted to crouch. “I’m not in the habit of repeating myself, get up or leave.’ This was a foreign group, all but one of whom couldn’t speak English. She made no allowance for this and was just so rude. Complete jobsworth.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 21, 2024
- BEVERLEY W2 contributionsViewing point at the ShardWe visited the Shard and we were amazed at the fantasic views. We had a couple of drinks from the bar in the viewing area and met a really great guy called Micheal that was working there he was a London Expert. I would like to say what a really friendly, happy, helpful and knowlegable guy he was. He knew right away we were from the North and what a laugh we had with him. He tool us round the viewing area pointing out the sights. He told us that we needed to make sure we experienced the views from the toilets which I have to say is a little weird being able to see over London while sat on the loo... Definately worth a visit.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 30, 2024
- Travel529New York City, New York287 contributionsOne time visit only. Average attraction. One time visit only. Check weather before you visit. We found the entry and exit staff to be poorly trained and lacked hospitality. The staff doesn't know how to take guest pictures nor do they guide them as to whether its coming good or not, they are just bored of their job and not interested. Lack of seating options. People visit here for London skyline views however if you do not want to spend then there are other options (cheaper and may be free, book in advance) in London for city skyline viewsVisited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 1, 2024

This was our third visit to The Shard - the entrance procedures were quick and easy, the ride on the lifts to the viewing platforms was quick and everyone who guided us were friendly and helpful.
The almost empty entrance lobby gave the impression that numbers would be limited but on arriving at the lower viewing platform we realised that the floor was packed with visitors. We purchased expensive drinks of bottled beer and water avoiding the outrageously priced champagne.
The views are spectacular but the tables next to windows make viewing particularly difficult when trying to socially distance
COVID Related: no masks, far far too many people making social distancing an impossibility on either floor, we were extremely uncomfortable and did not stay very long as being safe far more important than the views
Our advice - AVOID until pandemic is over OR The Shard take reasonable safety precautions

I paid for a family of 5 to visit the Shard on the deluxe package (ÂŁ49 per head) and left a bit disappointed. The blub on the deluxe package stated, "Your ticket includes a cocktail (or mocktail) or a glass of Moet & Chandon champagne" but when I went to order the champagne cocktails I was told that I could only have a limited number of cocktails from the list - it should have been made clear to customers that we were restricted to the cheapo cocktails and could not pick from the menu.
The views were stunning and we were not hassled to leave after 15 minutes. However, there was limited seating space so after half an hour of walking about we had to leave because there were no seats available.
The deluxe package also stated, "This ticket includes four souvenir digital photographs. Remember to collect these as you exit by showing this
ticket to a member of our photography team". However, when we went to collect the photos we were told that we had had to download and print them off ourselves. Very disappointing ending to an overpriced spectable.

easy to find as its very tall. went to the 72nd floor , what a view on a clear day you can see all the great views of London the bar is a little expensive but well worth the money. But beware it could be cold as it is a bit exposed. The 68th floor is enclosed and the veiw is just as incredible, and there is no limit to how long you stay up there. Beware if you go to the toilet there are big windows which have great views of London so sight seeing while you pee

This was a gift and was certainly an experience but like most London Tourist attractions I feel when you’ve done it once, you don’t feel the need to do it again (well that’s how I feel). Now the process was smooth and there was no queuing to enter. The 2 lifts throw you up 68 floors in like 40 seconds, prepare for the ear popping! Now then top tip, when you get off you walk into viewing platform, go up one flight and you enter the cocktail bar where you will queue for 30-40 mins to get a cocktail, won’t get a table and barely find a space to look out the window! Or you could walk up another couple of flights and find another cocktail bar, more space and plenty of seating #notbitter. Cocktails are £15-£20 each if you don’t have one included on your ticket. Glad I have had the opportunity to experience it, wouldn’t bother again as once you have seen it you have seen it.

Afternoon tea at the Shard. I have intentionally left it it a couple of weeks to write this review. I thought maybe time would soften the disappointing experience. It didn’t. We were given the afternoon tea experience at the Ting restaurant as a thank you for renovations to a bungalow for my mother. It proved impossible to make a reservation using the contact details in the presentation gift pack. The phone number didn’t connect and no reply to 4 emails. Ringing the Shard itself didn’t help. Almost like the restaurant is a franchise and you will have to contact them yourself. An internet search revealed the correct contact and a reservation made. We did have to give our credit card details though even though the tea was already paid for in full. If we didn’t turn up they would charge £70 to our card even though they already had a payment of £140 from mum. Arrived to a nice meet and greet concierge who were very pleasant and showed us to the lift. 1st impressions were very good and were shown to a nice table against the window. The lady serving was pleasant but we struggled to understand her. Partly due to the face mask and her strong foreign accent. She was trying to say we had to pay £140 or more if we wanted a glass of fizz. Even though we explained it was a gift and that it was pre paid she insisted she needed proof. The presentation gift pack was too big to carry in my wife’s hand bag so ensued frantic email searching for proof. Some 10 minutes later waitress appeared and said it was ok they had found the booking! No apologies no nothing. By this time the mood was soured. Tea was very poor. waitress asked if there were any special dietary requirements. I do not like cheese so asked if there was an alternative. Yes no problem, chicken is available. Great. What I actually got was “cucumber on some sort of margarine” her words not mine! The remainder of the tea was unimpressive. By this time the nice afternoon tea experience had evaporated and a feeling that my mum had been ripped off was more prevalent. On a plus note the girl singing and playing the guitar was very good. The view was great but so is the view from the sky garden and that’s free. Overall we were very disappointed in the experience.

Chose to visit The Shard whilst on a recent break in the city.
I last visited The Shard back in February 2013 not long after it opened as a 30th birthday trip! 8 years on it seems to have come on a way!!!
Our tickets were booked in advance online knowing at the time Covid was limiting its numbers so to ensure we didn't miss out secured our booking. We booked to go on a Sunday evening at 5pm. Upon arrival there was no que and having showed our passes we walked straight to the lift area which quickly took us up to the top.
We were fortunate to have some beautiful weather whilst we were up there so you were able to see for miles across the city and spot all the iconic tourist attractions. It was nice to see from when I had last visited the viewing platforms had now been turned into some great drinking spots with bars and tables over looking the views. I did feel some of the positioning of tables did hamper viewing but I guess they had to be put somewhere.
Love the fact that you can get right up to the glass within the Shard allowing for some great pictures. Definitely recommend on a visit to London if your not afraid of heights!

Honestly so disappointed. Booked as a birthday gift and was so looking forward to the experience. What we actually got was a lift with no atmosphere, no information up to a room, with granted epic views but due to social distancing meant we could just awkwardly walk around, could only have a drink if you had a table but only minimal tables available for the amount of people so after around 10 min had no other option but to leave! What an absolute waste of what could have been a great experience! Virgin Experiences need to seriously look at their packages as this was such a let down. Would recommend that anyone considering this gives it a miss, so disappointing. I would recommend that the Shard get their act together and give customers an experience with information about the making etc rather than a lift to a room with too many people in it to be able to do anything other than leave! It would have been nice to leave with a bit more info on the shard, the makings and logistics etc rather than just a view of London which I could have got from a Ryan Air flight from the nearest airport at probably a cheaper price than your journey on a lift!!!
P.s I do realise that social distancing is important and support in every way but to pay full price for a sub standard experience is not acceptable, contingency plans should be in place.

the entrance to the Shard is not very well signposted and staff were not available to ask. Having tagged onto the end of an existing queue, the process was quick and smooth.
Staff were helpful and due to restrictions only 6 people in the lift.
The view from the Shard is good but I do not feel value for money.
Refreshments are available at the lookout floors, over inflated prices. But you do have a very good outlook.

It was very good views from there and we had bought the tickets on an offer 12 months or more before as I think they had been extended due to covid. We went in July 2021. We had been recommended to get free tickets for Sky Garden but unfortunately all the free tickets when we went to look had all gone but instead we booked for the bistro and so get to look around Sky Garden anyway and just pay for a meal. We had done this couple of days before we went to The Shard. I have to say that yes the Shard is taller and it is iconic building in London but it isnt very spacious up there and even with restricted numbers still because of covid we struggled at times to see the views and take photos as people were just standing drinking not even looking out but preventing others from seeing. Went to the toilet and that was quite some view! You look across at Sky Garden on the opposite side of the river and not as tall but in all honesty we preferred the openess of Sky Garden and of course you can get to just go there for free if book free tickets in time or just book for a meal in the bistro which is lovely. It depends what you want and what your budget.

We visited The Shard as it was included in our London Pass. I am very thankful I didnt book and pay the full price. Unless you want a very expensive drink at the top, there is literally nothing else to do apart from take photos. We left after 15 mins. It is great to say we've been up The Shard, but I wouldnt recommend families to visit and pay the full price, you would get a similar experience by visiting the Sky Garden which is free. Kids were very excited that they went to the top, but they were disappointed that there was nothing else to do.

I hear there is a 'glass' bridge, is this correct? Also is it part of a tour and which ticket would I need to purchase. I think my pal wants to eat and drink and take pictures. Would he be able to use his Go Pro?
Thanks guys.
Written January 6, 2024
No. I don't believe there is a glass bridge, or other type of platform that sticks out from the building. There are 2 floors where you can take photos. The lower floor, of the two, is enclosed by glass and heated. This is where you can sit at tables and order food and drinks. The upper floor is open and you can feel the wind and rain, if that happens to be the weather that day. They encourage you to take photos and shoot video. There isn't a time limit so you can stay as long as you like too.

If I eat at one of the restarants at the Shard, do I still need to buy a ticket for the viewing deck? And about how much time do you spend on the viewing deck? Thank you!
Written March 11, 2023
Eating at one of the restaurants in the Shard does not give you access to the observation deck which will cost extra. The restaurants are located about half way up the Shard.

I'm probably going to have about 3 hours spare on one day of my trip to London in afew weeks and may go to the viewing platforms but do I have to pre book or can I turn up and pay when i get there? I'm not going to be eating but may have a drink, will I have to pre book a table for that too? There will probably be just me.

Hiya, I have not been to the viewing platform so not sure if you have to book in advance. I would book in advance just in case.
You can go to the bar on the 31st floor and have drinks and nibbles without booking. Just show up, have a minimum of ÂŁ25 on you to cover your drinks, then you are good to go. I am sure you will enjoy the experience.
