In the ultra exclusive neighbourhood around St. James, as in Rolls-Royce and yacht building businesses exclusive, we visited the London home of the Spencer family, yes, as in Princess Diana. It has been fully restored from its derelict state to its former 17th C glory by Lord Rothschild and it's amazing. The gardens were also open for the first time... More

It's not easy to visit since only open on Sundays (& closed during August & January). If you have a Sun afternoon departure flight, you can plan to book online for the first tour at 10:30AM which finishes promptly at 11:30 and will allow plenty of time to get to airport. The mansion is beautiful and our guide Ian was... More

Originally the London House of the Spencer family ,and so handy during " the Season " for the adjacent St.James ' s Palace ,this very large luxurious townhouse is mightily impressive . Now leased to the Rothschilds, who have successfully and sympathetically restored the house to its glory . The ground floor loosely is in the Roman idiom ,whilst the upper... More

Tucked away down a small road off Piccadilly facing St James's Park this elegant town house, or palace, is well worth a visit. Each of the eight rooms open to the public on this guided tour are superbly restored to their Georgian grandeur and about 10 minutes is spent in each while the knowledgeable guide reveals so much information on... What a lovely residence. Glad we took this tour, tried to 2 years ago and it was closed. It's an 18th century residence that you can tour and it can also be hired for private events like a wedding (Rupert Murdoch and Gerry Hall did). Our tour guide Lindsay was fabulous and she kept us interested the whole time, her... More

Only open on Sunday's ten months of the year - but no need to book. A veritable palace gem with fabulous rooms and very knowledgeable guide. Worth the £10/12 entry

Gorgeously restored 18th town house at Green Park. Impeccably decorated to time of first Earl of Spencer. Take the guided tour as we did to appreciate how thoroughly authentic it has been restored. Our guide surely was an art historian at university, for she knew everything about all furnishings and art. Only house of this type available to see. If... More

Staying in St. James's

Neighbourhood Profile
St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
