The area
Neighbourhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
How to get there
  • Green Park • 5 min walk
  • Piccadilly Circus • 8 min walk

Always make time to visit Lock and Co when I am in town.

As a hat wearer, I have found Lock and Co offer the best levels of service and range of hats in London. The shop setting is something to behold and always enjoy being emersed in the history held in the building. The advise and help offered from the staff is second to none so all in it makes for a very special buying experience.

During my last visit, I was privileged in being able to visit the 007 museum at the back of the shop and see the range of Bond memorabilia. It was fascinating.

See you next season for my Spring headwear.

My wife and I visited lock & co this week, and soon as we entered the shop we got a very half hearted hello after that it all went downhill, as we looked around the shop staff just walked past us no smiles or even offered any help at all. They all seemed to by trying to serve a group of people at the front of the shop. Completely ignoring anyone else in the shop. So we left and I bought a hat in Christy's instead (,much better service) Come on Lock & co sort it out.

If you are in London and you love hats this is the shop to go to! Whenever I am in London, I will pop into Lock & Co Hatters to check out their new hats. It became a sort of a tradition to do so. So whenever my mom and I went to London in the beginning of July, we went to Lock & Co Hatters to look for a lovely Panama hat. Everyone in the shop is wonderful and very friendly. But if you go and you are looking for excellent customer service and maybe even a bespoke hat, then ask for Jayesh Vaghela who goes by the title Master Hatter. He is extremely knowledgeable about hats, knows exactly what you are looking for, and treats anyone like royalty. He tries to fulfill every wish. I bought a Panama hat but wanted a bespoke band in the color khaki/olive to match my summer clothes. He immediately got the ribbon, explained the process, and made my hat bespoke and unique. it turned out lovely. I just love it! Anytime I can go, my experience is truly special and I am just happy to be there! There is truly no other hat shop as Lock & Co Hatters and I already told Jayesh that we will be back next year for a new hat.

A shadow of former times. I have bought hats from Lock for twenty years or more. The quality of hats I looked at on a recent visit was very very disappointing and the shop had an air of chaviness to it though prices were maintained.

A visit to Bates nearby was much more satisfactory.

I fear for the future of this shop unless it gets back to traditional values.

I doubt it will retain its Royal Warrant unless they supply better to The Households.

It can be done. Both Berry Bros just next door and Bates seems to be maintaining standards.

First of all, I love hats - wherever I go, I love to look at hats, but finding the perfect hat is another matter. For many years I looked forward to shopping at Lock & Co and my visit did not disappoint, The ladies section is upstairs and the salespeople could not have have been more helpful or honest. After trying on many hats, I found the perfect hat and even other customers in the store commented how nice the hat looked. It was slightly too big so they stitched in a band and the hat fits perfectly.

While they were working on my hat, I had a chance to look at the historical artifacts within the store - even if you are not in the market for a hat, the display in the rear of the store is worth a visit.

Whenever I wear my hat, I get many compliments, often being asked where I purchased such a great hat.

I cannot wait for my next visit to London and looking forward to another fun hat buying experience - next time I may have to arrange my London visit to coincide with the after Christmas sale - I wonder if there is a summer sale?

My wife and I always stop in during our trips to London. Although we often purchase while there we often come home and order via their web site. This is particularly helpful because we have seen the hats on and know what we are buying. One other thing -- their sizes seem to be slightly larger than in the US. Given that these good folks have been sizing hats before the US was even a country (and probably invented hat sizing) I have to assume that Lock and Company sizing is more accurate -- I find that my head measures 1/8th smaller in the UK. Great place -- friendly and helpful staff and they will tell you -- very tactfully -- if a particular hat style does not look flattering and politely steer you to somethng a bit more appropriate. We will be back.

Thank you for your feedback. As England's oldest hatters we work to British sizes, however all of our staff are trained in international sizing.

I've been to Lock & Co many times and over many years. I have bought trilby's, panama's and many a hat from Lock's. The service used to be excellent but there has been a marked decline. Today I went in to pick up my hats which I had given for steaming and resetting the crowns. The lady was about to pop them into a shopping bag, thus destroying the work done. When I asked why she isn't giving a box the answer was the boxes are only given for new hats and a box is 'maybe' £35. When I sent her to check the price again of a paper box, she came back with £10.

I paid the £10; but of course it's the principle, not the money. But I don't see myself going back here. This is all while another lady, who had seen me buy three more hats the previous week and remembered me, was watching.

Too many tourists, too much trading on history. I am finding a new hatter.

Hi Miran_Ali, We are sorry to hear that you felt you received an unsatisfactory level of customer service when you visited our shop earlier this month. I have spoken with the Retail Manager who I believe served you on the day you visited and purchased some hats from us, and he/we is taking your comments very seriously. For over 330 years we have prided ourselves on offering excellent quality hats with exceptional service and take on board every piece of customer feedback. We love to hear that you have been a fan of Lock's over the years and we sincerely hope that your last visit will not stop you from visiting us in the future. Kind regards, Lock & Co. Hatters

My daughter is an avid hat collector. One of her dreams was to visit Lock & Co. while we visited the UK this summer. I was a bit apprehensive about this establishment and was concerned that it could be filled with stuck up salespeople, that might push my daughter aside. Nothing could be further from that idea. My daughter was greeted enthusiastically (especially when they found out it was her dream to visit the store). Her salesperson was Jayesh and he was AMAZING! She knew exactly what she wanted (and had saved a long time for it). Jay fit her and went over the care of her new investment and took her on a tour of the store. Absolutely a wonderful store full of so much history and to top it off they have lovely employees who really care. It was quite the highlight for her and I cannot thank them enough for giving her such a wonderful experience.

We visited Lock & Co. Hatters while in London and LOVED the shop.
Bought 3 nice classy hats for my husband.
But their online service is horrible, at least it was for me.
I ordered two hats the beginning of november 2013, and still to this day have to receive my order.
They did NOT give me a tracking number. I've emailed them but their responses are few and evasive.
I have tried calling the phone number on the website but cannot get through.
Am I stuck ? WIll I ever get my order? God only knows!

Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding your online experience with Lock & Co. We are looking to provide customers with a much improved service in 2015 and that will match the exceptional standards that we have in-store.
