Visited for a Saturday evening Jazz gig; venue is upstairs and fairly compact. Well stocked bar with friendly staff, and great music. I just felt that the venue was way too full- you could barely move once sat down (if you had a seat, we ended up on window bench type seats) let alone get to the loo, and the... More

As always this club is buzzing with great vibes, yes its cramped beyond belief but its still great, the people are fab, the beer good ..... what more could you want from a jazz dive? And try to book online as its a lot cheaper - we paid £10 plus £1 booking fee online compared to £15 if you just... More

On entering we were told where are table was by friendly member staff. Fortunately we would have had so share our table with two random people but they did not turn up. They had a decent selection of drinks, at a reasonable price. The music got going at approx 20.45 and was brilliant! Very authentic and a pleasure to watch... More

Book a table, relax and be entertained. We saw and heard Carol Grimes and her musicians. There were two sets with a short intermission. She sang jazz standards, blues, songs written by her and friends. The venue can be crowded but the sound system is fine and clear and everyone can see the performers. Wine, beer etc is served by the glass or bottle,coffee... More

Robust jazz club with original jazz attitude. A good local jazz band was performing the night I visited the club and the audience was there to listen the music, not to visit a must to see club. Highly recommedated.

My friend and I left Portsmouth late afternoon to see Tassos Spiliopoulos (easy for you to say that) at the Vortex Jazz Club, both new to me. The venue is quirky, above a cafe in one of the less salubrious corners of trendy Dalston and overlooking a skateboard park, the only time I've been able to listen to jazz and... More

The hugely talented Tom (sax), Alexandra (tpt) & Mark Ridout (gtr) performed some exceptional jazz tonight, ably supported by a great rhythm section. Loved the choice of music from Coltrane to Stevie Wonder! The Vortex was quieter than usual this Tuesday night, surprisingly so given that Alexandra and Tom were so well featured in the BBC Young Musicians of the... More

If you want to see some quality live jazz, this is your best bet in London. Forget Ronnie Scott's with its snooty staff and overpriced door / menu. The Vortex is run by the community for music lovers. Supported by volunteers behind the bar (and sometimes sound desk), it's a bit rough and ready but a proper music experience. Music... More

I visited this club for the first time the other day, and really enjoyed the ambience, the company, the service and the act - The Ant Law Quintet. The place was full, and the atmosphere was friendly, intimate and upbeat. The proprietor greeted our party in a friendly way, and there was decent food and drink available. In the surrounding... I am new to Jazz, being a convert after my wife's influence and listening to the various channels on Play. After reading about the various Jazz venues in London I was drawn to Vortex because it is affordable and run by volunteers. I was not dissapointed by the music and the venue was better than I expected. Me, I am... More
