It made a nice change to look at the historical side of a holiday to Whitby, I love history but the tour of a very small museum is rather expensive.

Nonetheless we believe you enjoyed your visit! You can pay £5.40 for a sandwich and a coffee on the railway. When it comes to food for mind and eye, is it too much to pay for a unique assemblage of original material about Britain’s greatest explorer? We are a not for profit charity which does not receive any regular public... More

Fascinating to find letters in Cook's own handwriting. If he is a hero to you - and he was a remarkable seaman, navigator, explorer and leader - you will be delighted to find intimate things which were part of his life. And some original sketches by the artists of the 3 voyages, Parkinson, Hodges and Webber. Also an actual cabinet... More

Thank you for your thoughtful review. It is wonderful to have the desk that traveled round the world with the botanist Johann Forster. We bought it from his family, and I expect you notice the statement of provenance which is displayed beside it. More

Visited the museum to find out more about this great man following travels to Canada, Alaska, New Zealand and Australia where there are testaments to Captain Cook - he seems to be more famous abroad than in the UK. The museum is quaint, and located in the house where James Cook served his apprenticeship in Whitby harbour. I found it... More

Thank you for your review. The Museum is a serious study of Cook suitable for anyone, including children, who may be enthralled by his achievements. We get some astonishing results with quite young children. However, you would be right if you said it was not somewhere where children may be left to entertain themselves! The Museum has activities for children... More

Extremely well presented house museum, with great artifacts and history for ease of understanding. Visiting this gem of a museum, you are invited into the time of Captain Cook and the amazing maps which were developed during that time. How he explored South East Asia and New Zealand, while learning about other cultures. The film is helpful and the rooms... More

Thank you for your review. You mention South East Asia. Next year’s special exhibition is titled .From ‘Kamchatka to Krakatoa’ and will deal with less well-known aspects of the Cook story – the tragic stop at Batavia towards the end of the First Voyage and the return of the ships of the Third Voyage after Cook’s death. Easy to find. Very popular with tourists. A lot of visitors from abroad there when I visited. Knowledgable receptionist. Good displays on show. Small gift Shop in reception. Well worth a visit.

We though the museum very well done, however had had the privelege of visiting the James Cook Museum in Cooktown, Queensland, Australia which is infinitely superior. The museum is staffed by volunteers and alas, like so many such institutions, there are few younger folk willing to replace the aging and repeating staff.

The Museum in Cooktown is excellent, focused on one of the more dramatic episodes in the Cook story. We are more optimistic about the future of volunteering – people come forward when they retire and look for new interests, and they will go on doing so! More

This charity run visitor centre was clean and very well laid out. The lass on the desk was extremely helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There were volunteer helpers to add information on request. A very good visit

The house was full of pictures and information about Captain James Cook and his apprenticeship there. Gift shop was fairly expensive, though that is the trend nowadays.

Thank you for your comments. We believe the prices in our shop are fairly standard. Other than through invaluable Gift Aid, independent museums like us do not receive any revenue income from the public sector. Without our volunteers, entry charges and shop, we could not exist More

It's in the old part of Whitby and sadly too many people passing by. This is a real historical jem in a very compact venue. Prepare to climb stairs to get the full experience, and go back for free with your annual ticket.

Thank you for your review. The ‘Annual Ticket’ comes with Gift Aid which can be reclaimed from the Tax Man by charities such as the Captain Cook Museum. Long may the concession continue! More
