We were staying in Scarborough and went for a day to Whitby. We parked at the Abbey which is Stunning and we walked along to the Steps and went down all 199 of them to the heart of Whitby. We also went back up all 199 Steps.! The little curiosity shops were Stunning and for February it was fine and... More

We climbed the steps to the Abbey without any prior planning, as it was our first day. Unfortunately it was shut, however, the church by the Abbey was open and well worth a visit. The wood seating and cubicles in the church were impressive considering the same people who built Captain Cooks ship (carpenters), built the inside of the church... More

Came here on a day trip with a friend and definitely had to make the climb to see this amazing piece of gothic architecture. The Abbey ruins are stunning and even though it's quite pricey to look around inside, it's well worth doing so. There are a lot of steep steps leading up to the Abbey though, so you need... More

Piece of history worth a visit. Entrance via the visitor centre where there is a bit of a hard sell to get you to take out a membership for the National Heritage.

Really nice spot, lots of atmosphere, abbey ruins are very thought provoking and you can see the list or you in your imagination. Good few hours to wander and take it in. Staff are welcoming, English heritage site.

A lovely sunny day today to go to the Abbey, the sun shone through the window of the Abbey and the blue sky above a very nice visit. We walked up the slope and came back down the steps much easier on the knees.

Whitby Abbey is a must visit site. However when one arrives it is annoying to have to subjected first to a quite hard sell to sign up to English Heritage membership. You then pay around seven quid -but do you want a guide book and earphone guide ?(no thanks). Do you want to gift aid? etc etc You feel a... More

The abbey ruins are interesting. The variability of the stone is particularly striking to a photographer, and there is a pond which gives interesting reflections for your photos. But it's a smaller abbey with fewer visible ruins than many (Fountains, for instance), so to me the admission fee seems rather high. There is more to see at Scarborough Castle (also... More

This visit was very important for me as someone who loves old horror literature, so I may be a little biased. The abbey is beautiful, huge, and breathtaking. It was cold and windy, which only heightened the effect. The visitors center was also very well done and maintained.
