Overview
More
Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England ruled for two years from 1483 to 1485. His short reign was marked by controversy, rebellion and challenges to his throne which led to his death at the Battle of Bosworth aged 33 years of age. Find out about his early life as his brother, Edward IV struggled for the throne of England with Henry VI; see arms and armour from his reign and enjoy multimedia presentations about the key battles of the Wars of the Roses. Children can get involved in our special medieval camp featuring the gruesome bits Richard's history provided by 'Horrible Histories' author, Terry Deary.

Bit of a Richard III nerd so this was on my to-do list whilst in York. Based in Monk bar, it’s split over two floors and gives information on Richard, his life as a youth, a King’s brother and then a King himself, and then...More

Access is up a steep flight of steps to the top of Monk Bar, the views are worth the climb. The film is informative and the explanations and models of the various Wars of the Roses battles are good. The timeline displays make intersting reading....More

We came upon this museum while looking for the city wall walk and indeed that’s where it is. A word of warning - it does involve several narrow flights of stairs. The top floor of the exhibition centres around a very informative video about the...More

Interesting exhibit, but left us wanting more. Too short, too small. Takes about 1/2 hour to complete

Small but enjoy learning of it history! The small prison cell was an eye opener on how people were treated.

It was a bit unexpected to find that ‘at Monks bar’ actually meant ‘in Monks bar’. It was fun to climb into and around the gate house, but it would be hard for elderly, those with disabilities or small children to get about safely. I like the...More

When in York I have always visited this museum since the so called 'Wars of the Roses' is of particular interest. On entry I always boorishly announce to the staff I'm a Henry Tudor supporter half expecting to be hurled from the first floor reception...More

Really not much to this It's nice to be within the gate etc but if you have any knowledge, even minimal, about Richard 3 you won't learn anything new. Info written on boards and a few exhibits is really not enough to be classed as...More

The exhibition makes excellent use of the available space in the gatehouse. Access is not easy because of the steep steps but the effort is worthwhile. Richard III only forms one aspect as the displays relate to the Wars of the Roses generally so that...More
