York has a few squares but this one is the prettiest and has a great bench seat to relax and take in the views. While wondering around York you are likely to come across this square and I would recommend a visit here, it's worthwhile and quite pedestrianised, so more people and fewer cars are here.

York Assize of Ale is a once a year charity bash based on an ancient tradition. It was great seeing all the folk dressed up in medieval garb. The Sheriff's Pillory was set up outside the Mansion House and three wet sponges at £1 proved a good buy!!

Really worth craning your neck. Failing that, a bit of people - watching? Street entertainers and buskers are almost always in attendance. A number of the... More

The Christmas tree in St Helen's Square is my absolute favourite. It's classy and clearly the thousands of lights on the tree must take an age to put on. Its worth the effort as it is the best Christmas view in the city

This is really central to York and has a few 'attractions' off it in terms of wine bars and pubs which you certainly shouldn't miss. Just a little way from City Screen Cinema too, which houses the Riverside Bar and Cafe - a good place to sit outside on a sunny day. A place to people watch, but beware of... More
