This tower was just across the road from where we were staying and gave us a starting point to walk along the wall. It was residents weekend, so the tower was open, which didn’t happen very often, so we had a chance to look inside. There was a detailed background to the history of who invaded York throughout history and a medieval toilet, it was worth it.

This tower is over 500 years old, and me and my girlfriend had a great half hour in there. The volunteers are really enthusiastic, and come from the local charity Friends of York Walls (www.yorkwalls.org.uk) We read about the opening on a local website but have found that all the upcoming open days are on their web page. Don't miss the medieval loo on the first floor, or the top floor with its views and historic maps. It's free to enter but should you have a spare pound or two, there are a selection of cards, books and maps to buy on the ground floor.

I was walking the walls around the city of York and found that this masonry tower was open for visitors. Some very friendly and knowledgeable volunteers showed me up the spiral staircase to see the unspoilt rooms where the watchman and his family lived.
We puzzled over the sockets in the walls and some children were giggling at the garderobe (toilet) hidden in a corner room,
The final delight was seeing the strangely built timber roof and learning how it wasn't built with the tower, but added sometime during its first 100 years.
This is a delightful and interesting place to visit and I'll be sure to bring my friends when they visit York.

Having walked the city walls it was interesting to find Fishergate Postern Tower open and manned by volunteers. What a gem to find! Four floors with lots of information and knowledgeable people on hand. This is a newly opened part of the city walls and well worth a visit. To find out when the tower is open you need to look on The Friends of York Walls web site as it is only open selected dates.

Visited on Residents week end when all attractions are free to Residents. Expected it to be heaving but it was so well organised you barely noticed.
One of several Bar Towers in the walls of York and stands on three floors.
Whilst quite small with a very narrow winding staircase; it is not for the skittish or claustrophobic!
The top floor has an interesting history of both York and the Tower with views are well worth the climb. The messonine floor has an ancient gardarobe (toilet) that appears to empty onto the street..... Look out below.... With more historical information and the ground floor introduces you to the Tower. Friendly volunteers helped by shouting, 'coming up, or down' whichever was appropriate for the stairwell but waiting times could be long I'm sure on very busy days or if people are less than fit.
Donations are requested and welcomed for this great historical vestage from the ancient and Dark Ages.

Fishergate Postern Tower is a superb Grade I listed rectangular tower that is one of several towers ( Bars ) you will find dotted around the city.
Part of the fortifications and famous York walls ,this tower makes for some great photographic opportunities .
The tower is open to the public but opening hours are sporadic, set over three floors with volunteers, possibly The friends Of York group helping out, it's an interesting tower to visit but even if you can't gain entry it's still a great tower to visit.
Easy to locate on Piccadilly and well worth checking out.

This is just a single tower part of the city wall, on this one there is not much to see just the tower and the structure that represent the historic icon and part of the defense of they city.

This tower was built between 1504 and 1507, it is an impressive rectangular stone building at the end of a section of York's medieval walls. Comprising four floors, access to each floor is through a steep and narrow staircase. They have an interesting collection of photographs and maps as well as an ancient loo on the first floor.

It is a year on since the dreadful floods in York, but happy to say that the Fishergate Postern Tower is back in business. On three floors with plenty of explanatory boards, this Tower is a must on your City Walls tour.
