Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

i was looking forward to the visit and had a fantastic time. Firstly the site is big and well managed, lots to see and learn about and the Museum on site was small but great and an absolute treasure trove of artefacts found, pottery, coins and loads of well preserved shoes. Next the facilities were good, information done well without... More

This museum and archaeological site is fantastic. There are things in the museum you just cannot see anywhere else in the world because of the extraordinary anaerobic conditions in the ground. I thought the highlight would be the tablets, and while these are unmissable it is the other artefacts which are captivating. The level of preservation is incredible, there is... More

Very interesting and informative. Staff were friendly and helpful and exhibits in museum were well displayed and easy to understand. All of the things in the museum were found on the site and give a really in depth understanding of how life was lived 2000 years ago. The kids enjoyed this as well in particular the reconstruction of Hadrian's wall.... More

This site is so much more interesting than the nearby, rather tired, English Heritage sites. Good exhibition of actual objects discovered on site, including wooden 'letter' tablets. Well worth the effort to walk around this site.

We were amazed to discover such a fine collection of well preserved Roman artefacts. The history of different settlements on the same site are well explained, as are the lives of those who lived there. Worth a visit for the story of the writing tablets alone. Check their opening times on their own website before making a long journey -... More

Went here for the first time yesterday. It was really good. The finds and information they provide in the museum was really interesting. Didn't get much of a chance to really appreciate the dig site due to atrocious weather but I know that if it were warmer then I would have really enjoyed wandering around the site. The one piece... We just visited the museum due to bad weather. Amazing collection of finds from Vindolanda including a unique, and large, set of leather shoes, wooden tools, textiles, writing tables and even a wig. Really worth seeing things that don't usually survive from this period.

If you ant to know what the Roman Times in Great Britian were like, then viit Vindolana! The exibitions are phenominal and the riuns are well marked with place names along the way. There are excellent guide books and audio that can be purchased if you are not a member. The time we went there were re-enactments and stalls were... More

The biggest piece of advice I could offer on visiting this great historical place, is, make sure you do not rely on public transport. In the summer months there is a bus that will take you from the train station up to the museum, which is great. However, when the bus is not running, you will have to take a... More
