    Must See near Hadrian’s Wall
Highly recommend, this was our favourite of the Roman sights we visited near the Wall (also went to the Roman Army Museum and Housesteads). The included guided tour was engaging and funny, and one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you Alex!! The museum was excellent as well. We learned so much. We’d love to go back next time we’re in the area, since this is an active archaeological dig and new discoveries are being made each year.

If there is a (free) guided tour available, it is worth it
What a site with so many different forts all on top of one another. They generally run free guided tours and it is well worth going round with one so that you can learn a lot more about what they know, what they think and what they just don't know (isn't that refreshing that they admit there are things still to learn). The site is on the side of a hill and the museum is at the bottom of the hill and up the other side a short way. Whilst the paths are good, it is quite a pull up! The museum is worth a visit and really adds to the understanding of the site and helps to explain the archaeological finds.

    Great place
Well worth a visit. It's been very well preserved and there have been some recent findings in their archaelogical digs which hopefully means there's even more to be discovered here! We missed the guided tour but it's easy enough to find your way around and have plenty of time to look at things. The gardens near the cafe are beautiful this time of year and well worth the walk back uphill after!

    Vindolanda
Never heard of this place, but boy was I surprised! This is the site of several Roman Forts built on top of one another. The ruins are extensive and the docent was extremely knowledgeable about them. Much more interesting than Stonehenge.

    Amazing and fun few hours
Have just returned from a few days in Northumberland and a highlight was spending a few hours here . We were lucky enough to be in time for a tour with Paul , who provides a extremely interesting and funny hour or so and shouldn’t be missed . As fantastic as this place is anyway it came to life with him , lots of facts and figures and amusing tales , his obvious love for what he does shows . Had lunch in the cafe , lovely fresh rolls and finished off with a look at the Museum . So many wonderful things to look at , very well set out and beautifully presented, a perfect way to end our time here . Some lovely walks by the river in the sun . Highly recommended, a fab day out .

    Vindolanda was worth it
Was looking to visit hadrian's wall and we deciding to visit vindolanda instead and it was so worth it. Costs £12-13 per person and loads of parking. Get there early about 10am before all the tourists. The weather wasn't great with it raining but the history of the place and the free guide from Paul was second to none. Free guide was 11am and 1pm. Recommend to visit this site which is steeped in history from roman times, Paul our guide was amazing with his knowledge and humour on the free guide for 60 mins highly recommend you get on his tour. They are still digged and finding new items in the fort. Little cafe at the end of the tour with lovely food and drinks and well priced. The museum they have there so amazing with the items they have and the standard, other items from that site normally go to the british museum. Tourist wise you will have people from all over. Was a few Americans that day and people visting the Northumberland area and a number of school trips. Cracking day and recommend a visit.

    What a great experience
This site is quite extensive. Definitely worth a couple of hours or more. The archeological dig is ongoing and you are able to watch. It is well signed with a very well done museum. The cafe is a great respite for tea and scones. It certainly lends itself to the phrase, History comes Alive.

    Worth the drive!
An amazing site and a fantastic guide. The free guided tours offered twice a day is a wonderful way to get a good understanding of the steep history of this site. Our guide Paul was outstanding! Knowledgeable and entertaining! It's out of the way but worth the trip especially if you do both museums and take a walk on Hadrians wall

    Great Day Out
Myself husband and children (8 and 12) called in on the way to the Lake District. We all loved the museum. It was full of really interesting artefacts. The gardens are pretty and there are lots of areas to explore. The cafe was busy and seemed a little disorganised. I would suggest taking a picnic. Great day out

Well organised and a fantastic museum
From the time we walked in, we were made to feel welcome by friendly staff. A fascinating guided walk through the fort with lots of extra interesting snippets about the people who lived there. We paid to see both the fort and the museum and I'm glad we did. The museum is huge and full of artifacts that were excavated, including a number of writing tablets. Some good displays for children, too. A few reconstructed buildings and delicious cakes at the cafe. Much better than another nearby fort we visited.

A true 5* experience!!! Hard to describe how much we enjoyed this superb destination. It is well worth coinciding your arrival with the regular guided tours; a big shout-out to Paul Tait who was our guide. Epic knowledge and delivery, Paul. The museum at the end is also excellent.

Vindolana Fort & Museum

This has been on my bucket list for some time as we love to visit historical sites. Hadrian's wall and forts were particular visits I was looking forward to.

The fort did not disappoint. The site is very accessible for all with good access to the ruins. As you would expect the fort itself is uneven but there is a good path around the site and to the museum or other entrance.

There are wooden posts which have a button to push to give a verbal summary of what you are looking at. You also have the normal poster boards scattered around to explain the excavations. There's lots of information around the entrance's and in the museum as well. At the opposite entrance of the museum entrance there is a good model of the fort which helps with visualising how it might have looked. There is also a small takeaway type cafe with seats outside here as well.

The museum itself was amazing displaying the finds over the years or replicas of them. I was astounded at some of them for their beauty and craftsmanship but also found the everyday finds interesting as well, some version's of which could be or are being used today!

Top tip it's best in my opinion to do the museum first to get the context of the site. Top tip: I would give yourself an hour or so to take it all in before setting off for the main site! Overall about 3 hours is enough I thought at the most.

There is a very good cafe on the Museum side and facilities were located at both ends of the site.

The fort itself is set back from Hadrians wall and used as a supply and patrol base. It's a special atmospheric location and despite seeing it on the TV I don't think I was prepared for the size of the fort or the complexity of the buildings in such a remote spot.

However it again demonstrates how advanced the Romans where and reinforces the need to visit this site on any Hadrians wall tour and I would highly recommend a visit here and go again

A fantastic trip to visit this developing site. Extra good due to joining the volunteer guided tour when I visited. Annette provided a program of facts, history and stories to bring alive the site of the village and fort. Great cafe, perfect after a chilly English summer visit in June. This history of the sight and the family connection from the early 20th Century, to 1970’s major discoveries and then to the present day just added to the experience. The sister Roman Army museum then completed the experience. Highly recommended.

We cannot praise Vindolanda enough. The museum is superb and incredibly interesting. The whole site is a wonderful piece of our heritage and its history and the history of its excavation is fascinating. For us, 4 fairly elderly visitors, it was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff that really made the visit one of the best we have made in recent years.

Well preserved & well toured Roman fort, with excavations ongoing [a team of 3 archaeologists and around 10 volunteers when we were there]. A lot to see, would recommend a visit for longer than 3 hours to appreciate everything

This was a spur of the moment trip and it was brilliant. The site is well maintained and all the staff were friendly. We had a guided group tour with Annette who is very knowledgeable and kept us all engaged. The cafe, shop and museum were also excellent. Definitely recommend people visit. Wear good shoes you don't mind getting wet as some parts are boggy

Absolutely fabulous! The whole experience was amazing. We had a free tour guide and I can’t remember his name but he had a great wit and knowledge of the site and history.

I could imagine this to be the new Disney for our country because it’s real and if you put some kind of huts here and tried to relive the experience for young kids it would be amazing.
After visiting Magna and watching the film, it brought everything to reality for me and I’m 66. I was blown away. Thank you
