Famous Oxford landmark. Right in the centre of Oxford.
Free to visit and worth scheduling a few minutes to see.
Steps are a good place to sit down for a few minutes too.
A reminder of less tolerant times.

Martyrs' memorial is an interesting and easily missed item to locate while wandering the streets of Oxford just across the road from the Ashmolean museum.

Splendid piece of Victorian gothic architecture that could easily just be driven past. Looking down from the third floor of the Randolph hotel gives it a whole new perspective.

This Gothic monument was erected in 1563 to commemorate the three clerics, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, executed in Oxford for heresy in 1555. It’s in a prime city centre location opposite the Ashmolean Museum and the Randolph Hotel. Although quite stained because of modern pollution, it’s one of the many must see locations in Oxford.

This kind of memorial has a little strange aura around it ... at first it looks like a church spire has fallen down the middle of the street (and where is the church building itself - you gaze around ...). Then it is understood that this is a monument in itself, usually of important historical burden. The location makes it also an excellent reference point and meeting place. A little melancholy beautiful.

The Martyrs' Memorial is a stone monument, constructed in 1840-42, standing at the intersection of the southern end of St Giles Street in Oxford. It commemorates the three Anglican bishops who were burned at the stake under Queen Mary in the 1550's.. Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer. The bishops were tried for heresy at University Church of St Mary the Virgin and imprisoned at the Bocado Prison near St Michael at the North Gate Church, before being burned at the stake just outside the city walls in Broad Street. You can visit that site, actually in the middle of the road now, in Broad Street and is marked by a cross of bricks set in the road.

It's a big column in the middle of Oxford, commemorating three Protestants burnt alive for their faith. An impressice structure, but would look better without the weeds growing on it.

This memorial is an important monument to Christian Church history. Research first, and look for the marker in the road that marks the spot where the men were killed. Also note that the memorial sits on the property of a Catholic church. Interesting...

This impressive monument commemorates the burning at the stake of archbishops Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley for their religious beliefs. Its worth a visit, and personally I don’t think its respectful for people to sit on the steps up to it given that it marks such a sad event, but each to their own!

This is an impressive Victorian memorial with an interesting history which is outlined in a plaque. There is an interesting photo in the small town hall museum showing a steeplejack removing a chamber pot from the pinnacle of the memorial that had been placed there by a student.
