Visited on 19th November 16. Really interesting tour they are run every 20 mins. opening at 10am. At the beginning it has to be a guided tour for health and safety reasons when going up to the tower, and then you have time to wander yourself at the end. Our tour guide was dressed in Victorian costume I think called Elizabeth.... More

Our guide was this very colourful gentleman who took us up the castle stairs to the very top to begin talking about this interesting place. The Oxford Castle Unlocked tour had begun! We gazed out of the various topside "windows" at the Oxford town below. From here, we descended into the very bowels of the castle where the prisons -... More

I really enjoyed this tour, the guide was interactive, fun and engaging! Would very much recommend as it gives a whole view of the castle. Was a good laugh too, and views from the top of the tower are great.

We wandered into the castle as we were staying in the hotel next door and wanted something to do. The entry price was quite reasonable (just over £10 for adults, £9 for students) and we were told a guided tour would be starting in 10 minutes. Perhaps it's our fault for not asking but the tour began with a climb... More

Sir Robert D'Oilly was our guide and his commentary was fantastic. Throughout the tour different stories of persons who stayed at the castle were detailed, explorations of the rooms of the castle (above & below). There is a small museum after the tour ends and all guest are welcome to explore any areas of the castle and crypts. There are... More

The tour is guided by a costumed actor who tells the story of the castle and later the prison. It was an entertaining way to learn about the history and fortunately there was little in the way of uncomfortable audience participation. The tour takes in the crypt and the tower and also parts of the former prison which was operational... More

The castle is nice, but the tour you need to pay in order to enter it is actually focused more on the stories and facts the guide tells (they are all dressing as key characters of the castle's history). They may make jokes and ask visitors to interact with some exhibits, and it may be fun for kids and family.... More

The tour guide was friendly and full of information. The visit is more centered on the history of the prison and stories of some inmates. It was a bit depressing hearing about the suffering that took place. Climbing the mound would be fun for children.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. I am pleased to read you found the tour guide friendly and knowledgeable. The tour aims to give a real account of the 1000 years of history the castle has seen and you are quite right when you say that some of this is bleak. As the building spent 800... More

Been there before, but this time went on the tour given by the highwayman, Isaac Darking. The tour was excellent. Both entertaining and informative, he managed to involve all the visitors, no matter what their age. Would thoroughly recommend it.
