- John Barrie WBath, United Kingdom7 contributionsBeautifully curated museum. The Holburne is a beautifully curated museum with engaging permanent and temporary exhibitions. The staff is friendly and professional. Sydney Gardens is a splendid space to discover after your museum visit. A must when you visit Bath.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten April 28, 2024
- Stephen DCocoa, Florida264 contributionsLady Danbury's estate in the 1813 Netflix-drama Bridgerton. We enjoyed the Gainsborough masterpieces in the Holburne Museum. We also were enamored by the building itself, on the inside and out. It was constructed in 1796 as the Sydney Hotel and much later became the repository for Sir William Holburne's art collection. It's a great way to spend a few hours, and the added bonus is that it's free.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024
- Chris HBath, United Kingdom1 contributionDoodle and Moore - excellentWe live in Bath and go regularly to the permanent and special exhibitions. We went to see Mr Doodle and Henry Moore Both we really excellent Henry Moore - seeing the miniature and maquette versions gave a real opportunity to see a lot of Moore works, and the early works showing his influences were particularly interesting Mr Doodle - these were a real delight. I particularly enjoyed the small works that were put in place of some of the permanent paintings and which echoed them. There were quite a few children there who evidently enjoyed itVisited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 5, 2024
- permia64,686 contributionsPortraits, early Henry Moore & Dutch Golden AgeInteresting to see some early small sculptures by Henry Moore. Given that it’s more usual to see his large-scale works of reclining figures outdoors. A assortment of portraits of notable figures in English life is central to the collections. Henry Walton’s William Brereton with a Portrait of Henry Woodward shows the main character in an elegant drawing room with one arm resting on the mantelpiece. A dramatic work shows the acclaimed actor David Garrick in the main role in the play Venice Preserv’d. Portraits of families feature well. European paintings are to be seen including some from the Dutch Golden period.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 29, 2024
- Mike W159 contributionsExcellent few hours at The HolburneCan’t understand the last two negative reviews. I thought the Holburne EXCELLENT and it far exceeded my expectations. I came from SW London for the Henry Moore miniatures exhibition but probably enjoyed the Mr Doodle one more and the permanent displays are also outstanding. The cafe was good too. If I lived nearer, I am sure I would have annual membership and the Sydney Gardens are also a nice place to stroll round afterwards. Just be careful if you are hoping to park your car at the museum. The car park is small and you might have to find an alternative which I imagine in Bath could be difficultVisited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten August 29, 2024

Cafe now serves overpriced, pretty tasteless tea in a throwaway cup with a plastic lid, disposable collar and stirrer. All had to then be thrown away (together) in one bin - no hope of anything being recycled. What should have been a pleasant cuppa in the garden wasn't enjoyable at all - you can't even us the museum's toilets now. Realise we have to be careful with Covid but can't 'proper' cups be put in a dishwasher by staff wearing gloves? Other places can do it.

A real pleasure. Eclectic collection, interesting pieces. The Grayson Perry Exhibition was the reason we visited but would recommend this little gem anyway. The staff/charming lady on the second floor was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and gave us the background to the Holburne collection. Cafe that looks out on to Sydney Gardens and a gift shop. Admission price £11 per adult.

We have visited the Holburne on several occasions in the past to see specialised exhibitions such as Peter Blake. Being in Bath just before lockdown we were pleased therefore to revisit and enjoy the Grayson Perry presentation. On a dry, sunny morning it was good to walk down Great Pulteney Street and sit in the tented garden cafe enjoying coffee before entering the galleries. The items on display from the earlier years of the artists work were very impressive and well presented. Staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. Covid restrictions were carefully observed and made for a very enjoyable visit. We will, no doubt, be back in the future

I’m ashamed to say that the Holburne Museum was unknown to me before going there to see the Grayson Perry ‘Pre-Therapy Years’ exhibition. The exhibition itself is wonderful - beautifully curated and gives such an amazing insight into Grayson Perry’s early work, much of which will be completely new to visitors. The museum, however, was a nothing short of a revelation. A fantastic display of paintings, crafts, and historical artefacts in a magnificent setting that I found utterly compelling. Add to that a sensitively designed modern extension that has only added to the beauty of the historic building (and has a great cafe). Glorious!

We came here to view the Grayson Perry pottery exhibition and an excellent venue it is. A beautiful building in a beautiful city and the staff were great and attentive whilst we're still in the throes of COVID. Social distancing and Sanitizers were encouraged at every opportunity and the wearing of masks compulsory. Visit with confidence.

Every large town, or small city, should have a Holburne Museum. Set at the end of an elegant street and situated in a beautiful park, this museum is one of Bath’s treasures. It is a friendly and welcoming place for everyone. There are some beautiful exhibits on permanent display and there is often a visiting exhibition. At present there is a really exciting and comprehensive show of work by Grayson Perry. The Pre-therapy Years is the most complete collection of the artist’s early work anywhere.

The restaurant/cafe is very disorganised and is easily the most inconsiderate and uncaring place I have ever been to. I was over charged by more than double and never got my order despite waiting outside in the damp for ages. It transpired that the staff already knew they had messed my order up and had overcharged me and that my order would never arrive but they did nothing other than leave me waiting outside in the cold for it. When I asked where my order was I was toild I had to wait my turn. When I eventually could wait no longer and asked for a refund and looked for it on my phone, I discovered the overcharge but no refund was there. I went back in and asked for the whole refund and they beeped at my phone and said they did it - but it was not there on my phone. I was told that it was because of wifi and would appear later but I told them my signal was good but of course they thought they knew better than a lady with grey hair. Nearly 2 weeks later I still have no refund. I am so cross about this still. It ruined my whole day out in Bath and by the time I got to get refreshments elsewhere in town I had a screaming headache. Three staff were involved in this fiasco, not just one. This place make you feel like a completely invisible nobody. I had been once before and it was very slow and disorganised then too. They weren't even that busy due to the weather.

A beautiful house (recently with a modern extension) is situated at the end of Great Pulteney Street. It houses many fine paintings and ceramics but also the eccentric collection of an acquisitive Georgian Gentleman. There are numerous fascinating items but I was especially taken by exquisite miniature portraits and jewellery. Helpful staff are on hand to assist willingly and there is a good cafe with outdoor seating in better weather.

An excellent collection of his early work. Fantastic. The museum is a real gem, with lovely gardens to walk around. Visit if you can. This exhibition has received excellent reviews in the national press and media. It’s a great opportunity to see something like this outside London.

This museum has some wonderful treasures and we could have spent a lot longer if we'd not had a train to catch. The china, silver, gems, paintings and furniture are beautifully displayed in a period setting. The only downside was the website booking was quite frustrating.

Hi how much is entry please and do carers go in for free ?
Written July 16, 2020
The Holburne website says to catch a no. 4 bus from station, but this doesn’t correspond with any bus maps I look at. I want to visit in the morning, setting out early, phone lines are now closed and with mobility issues, the bus is a must. I’d be grateful for confirmation of the bus number/ route from the station - if you can help, thank you so much!

Can you visit the coffee shop without paying £12.50 entry fee

Hi iis this near the railway station please?
Written November 30, 2016
Quite near - about a mile. Not a difficult walk and there's plenty to see along the way. Or you can take one of the University buses (during term time) from the bus station, near the railway station, as far as St Mary's Church (Bathwick Hill) and then it's only a few more minutes' walk to the museum.
