It is not often that the brisk east wind on this coastline is welcome but it was a hot day with clear blue skies when we visited Orford. The wildlife was not inclined to exert itself seeking shade where possible. There was an extraordinary heat haze which distorted views through the binoculars and rendered photography rather frustrating. Nonetheless we had... More

Went to Orford ness with my family for a day out and I must say I wasn't disappointed. You enter through the beautiful village of Orford and then after hiring a boat, getting the small trip across the quay, enter the vastness of the place. There is so much history to the place that you need to spend the whole... More

My husband wanted to visit Orford Ness for the photo opportunities of an unusual environment - it was certainly that! It's a long spit, covered in pebbles, quite bleak and blustery with little protection from the weather coming in from the North Sea. Its a big area in total but only a few tourists were there when we went, despite... More

A weird yet wonderful mix of beautiful nature and awful wartime experimentation. I felt that nature was almost sticking a finger up to what the area was at one time used for and has, over the years, started to flourish in amongst the shrapnel, lumps of concrete and ugly buildings. A visit here will mean a walk of some miles... More

I have wanted to visit this place for some time and I thought it was truly amazing. The buildings are fantastic and the NT volunteers very helpful. My only disappointment was not being able to gain access to the 'Pagodas' as this was what I really wanted to see. However, group trips are run to these buildings, so I will... More

Fabulous National Trust site with interesting historical bomb testing and ballistics history. Lovely walk along Orford beach to the lighthouse. Beware it is a long walk around the whole site for young children or anyone with difficulties doing 6-7km. It is very exposed as a consequence so pick decent weather! There is no cafe and little cover. Take supplies. The... More

We spent a lovely few hours here - would have spent longer had I have been more prepared! I didn't realise it would take so long to explore everything on the island, if I had known I would have packed a backpack with supplies as we went on a hot day and apart from a toilet there are no facilities... The site itself was very interesting with lots of military activities having gone on previously at the site, most of which you wouldn't expect in sleepy Suffolk! The buildings, as you would expect, are in various states of abandonment as they were left, although some have been restored to make them more interesting. Staff on arrival at the site are... More

This is a really beautiful place. There's a great walk along the sea wall and a little cafe for when you need a coffee. Views are super and it is really peaceful. It was a nice summer's day when we were there but it must be bleak in the winter. Also it is really remote and involves quite a long... More
