The only way of getting in, though, seems to be to go to a service. Which isn't a problem as this is an utterly beautiful church and once you're inside you could be in Venice or somewhere.

14 Hagley Road Edgbaston Just a 15 minute walk Broad Street / Hagley Road brings you to an oasis of calm, serene, silence, amongst the hustle-bustle of this great regional capital. Enjoy the splendid architecture and atmosphere of this small church : St Philip of...More

This is the most stunning building - beautifully looked after by the Oratory Fathers - lots of information - a beautiful, tranquil church and a vision of Rome in Birmingham! ................ but the toilet facilities were a disgrace - dirty, unkempt and no loo paper!!...More

By far the most beautiful church in Birmingham. Stunning architecture, feels very holy and the Oratorian Fathers are very welcoming. It's well worth the short bus ride from the centre of town, and Tolkien-Fans will find many interesting sites (the two towers, two of his...More

If you're a Tolkien fan this is a must, the church is beautifully preserved and as it's still functioning and ran by the catholic diocese is pretty much alive and used by the community. Perhaps the best piece of religious architecture you'll see in Birmingham....More

Great place: big and beautiful church, full of history and tradition. JRR Tolkien grew up there and it was the place of Bl. JH Newman (his shrine is recommended, with relics and space for prayer and devotion).

We attended a sung Latin Mass here on Sunday at 10.30. Apparently this takes place every Sunday at this time. The church is beautiful and we must return another time to look round. The music was wonderful, with an excellent choir and organist and the...More
