Antony Gormley's work divides opinion. While some might say that his work is essentially the same concept repeated, coming from Crosby (home to his Another Place with its iron men) I am definitely more of a fan than a hater. You certainly can't miss this typical rusted humanoid rising out of the pavement in front of Birmingham City Hall and... More

I feel like if you know your art, you will appreciate it. Anthony Gormley is a wonderful sculptor and to have something made by him in our city, is great - if you ask me. He's made such amazing figures. My favourite of which are the sculptures in the sea. I love Iron man, It just adds to the city's... More

True it does literally stand out in Victoria Square, still it has definitely made itself at home with enough lovers, haters and controversy! Worth a look since you're bound to visit Victoria Square anyway. What do you think?

This is a iron sculpture of a iron roman soldier outside the old post office in Victoria Square. A sculpture by Anthony Gormley which stands at 6m tall. Not much more to say.

This statue by Gormley (also Angel of the North and others) was donated to the city by TSB Bank, following the relocation of its HQ from London to the centre of Birmingham - in the old Post Office that stands nearby. It caused outrage among some locals and there was a campaign to take it down and give it back.... More

Reading the reviews of this sculpture it is not surprising to note a complete range of views from ecstatic to downright critical - and that is as it should be. Rather than join the debate re the statue in its own right, I'd like to agree with the reviewer who applauds the rise of innovative artworks in city centres across... More

Took a look whilst I was lunching in the square. The plaque mentions it's a gift from the TSB about relocating. If you're not a Gormley fan, no need to criticise it.

At first glance you're not sure what it is, a piece of artwork, a hurriedly made protest symbol, some promotion.... I don't know. Anyway it's not really worth going to see. If you're passing by, take a look.

Iron:Man by Antony Gormley commemorates the industrial heritage of the West Midlands and how it suffered in the late C20th. I love the way this statue grows straight out of the ground, with no plinth or barrier to demarcate it. The surface is rough cast and rusty, a sacrificial surface protection. It also reminds me of some mediæval burials where... More
