Picturesque lighthouse on a rugged coastline.
We visited the immediate area around the South Stack lighthouse during a one-day tour of the Isle of Anglesey. We drove here and parked in the RSPB (pay & display) car park located on the approach road. The lighthouse sits on its own island reached via a pedestrian bridge. There is a charge to visit the lighthouse itself and for our visit we chose to take some photos from the high cliffs overlooking it. The lighthouse may be approached via a series of zig zagging steps down the side of the cliffs and some spectacular views can be had as the visitor descends not only of the lighthouse but also of the rugged cliffs with the waves breaking around their base. I followed the steps down to the entrance to the bridge, but note that it is a long climb back up these to the cliff top! There is a good-sized café at RSPB car park and we used this as the weather closed in on what was a windy and showery day. Worth a visit if you like viewing rugged coastlines or photography.

    An amazing place
An amazing place run by the loveliest people. My daughter and I were made to feel so welcome and the talk at the top of the lighthouse was wonderful…tons of knowledge along with the odd Liverpool FC wisecrack. Brilliant!

    Worth the walk
This was a good place to visit, 400 steps each way and so not the easiest if you are a little creaky but well worth the effort. Mark in the lighthouse gave up lots of information. The climb up the lighthouse is also quite a climb but the views from the top and the talk about the lamp are worth it. We were lucky enough to see porpoises swimming below.

Great few hours at South Stack.
Four of us went during a break in the weather and it was well worth the experience. The walk there and back was a bit challenging but on arrival the staff were friendly and informative. The views were brilliant and we spotted a seal lurking around the lobster baskets. On leaving, a trip to the rspb centre rounded off the trip nicely đź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

A lovely place to visit even when the island is closed in winter
We went when the island was shut, no access across the bridge to the lighthouse itself (closed for winter). However, still excellent, we both loved it there. The steps are good fun. A sunny evening watching the sunset. Bumped into a couple of friendly people whilst there. Quite glad to be there while it wasn't heaving with loads of other tourists.

    Unique landmark, excellent volunteers
Grab your ticket at the booth next to the RSPB visitor centre. We'll worth the cost of admission - if you can take the climb! The warning is that there are 400 steps but I think this is the steps in the lighthouse. You can park a bit closer than the visitor centre but need to take the steep steps down the cliff to the island bridged (and back up again!). But it is very cool. You are greeted onto the island and tickets checked; you can buy a ticket here (cash only) if you missed the booth at the visitor centre. The island is tiny but good for photos as you make way to the lighthouse which has another volunteer by its information boards inside. Up the staircase to another volunteer, fun views and close up of the historic lantern (largest of its type) and an entertaining 10-minute talk. Maybe not for the claustrophobic or those unable to take the physical exertion. Otherwise excellent, highly commendable volunteers, friendliest lot. Highlight of Holy Island holiday.

    What a find!
What a find! Difficult to find a parking space on the two main car parks but there are a few spaces past the visitor centre that don’t seem to be advertised. Good footpaths and signage lead you to this fairly unique attraction. The re is a great restaurant and beauty spot on the main carpark for those that don’t fancy the trek, which can be done in about an hour. Kids love it as do most adults

Look at the views, don't count the steps!
The walk to and from the lighthouse was not for the faint hearted but views were spectacular, the guides in the lighthouse were friendly and helpful. There is plenty to see around the visitor centre for those not taking the steps to the lighthouse. The car parks could be better organised. The visitor centre cafe and shop were great.

    In every weather.. wonderful
Beautiful in sunshine, exhilerating in a storm, eerie at night... worth the trip in every weather. This little corner of Anglesey has so much history and on a decent day the walking is superb. My wife and I were there for storm Kathleen, and sunshine, probably the best combination possible. For only a tenner you can climb the tower and have a superb guided tour. Everyone was lovely and our guide was so knowledgeable, entertaining, and accomodating we ended up having rather more than our allotted time up in the lantern room with the irish sea and thousands of years of history. We learned so much about the facility but also about the wildlife - not just sea birds but three types of sea mammal (I wont steal his thunder). On the practical side, small children and anyone out of health should stay below. There are no toilets! No food or drink etc as its a reserve. Ideally buy your tickets up at the RSPB visitors centre but we had cash handy (no signal, no cards!). With a head buzzing full of all the fascinating facts the climb back up actually felt easier than the climb down had been - good steps washed with a stream of water in the rain. Glad I was in walking boots. Loved this place, the whole area as well as the actual lighthouse. Most definitely coming back.

Steps not for the faint hearted but worth the effort.
A lot of steps down to the bridge to cross onto the small island where the lighthouse is, but worth it for the amazing views from the cliffs and lighthouse. Lighthoue itself very interesting and good commentary from the guide. Even harder work climbing back but stoppig to take a breather allows you to enjoy the views. Recommended.

This was well worth the two hour drive. We parked up at the cafe located a short walk from the start of the lighthouse trail. We purchased the tickets from the ticket booth outside the cafe, ÂŁ17.50 for two adults and one child. Was well worth the walk, enjoyed climbing the lighthouse and having a 10-15 talk at the top of the lighthouse about the history and conservation of it. Walk back up was tough given it was such a hot day but enjoyed the cafe next to the car park.

Six long-time, middle-aged friends visited the lighthouse and it was a fabulous experience. We parked up in the RSPB car park as we thought that this was as far as we could get by car, but it turns out that there are another two car parks closer to the lighthouse. We bought the tickets to go inside the lighthouse at the senior citizens rate of ÂŁ6 each from the kiosk in the RSPB car park and began the walk up to the entrance gate to the beginning of the path down to the island. We counted 365 steps down to the lighthouse, then 118 steps up the inside, but if you are fit and healthy it is totally worth it. It was the first time that any of us had been inside a working lighthouse and it was really interesting, with a talk given by a volunteer in the light room. The climb back up to the car park nearly killed all of us as the steps are steep and never seem to come to an end, but we are so glad that we made this visit.

Park at the lower car park - £2.50 for the day. Cross the road to see the amazing circle huts of a large Iron Age settlement, then head for the Tower along the cliff path for incredible views. In season the tower is open for viewing birds nesting on the cliffs, with cameras set up so you don’t miss any activity. Next walk on to the South Stack, No dogs on the stack and lots of steps. You can get great views without descending.
If you still have time and energy, walk up to the tor for some more views of the surrounding sea and cliffs.
No cafe here at present but a trip down the road to the National Park just outside Holyhead will provide you with a lovely cafe and more cliff top walks if you haven’t yet seen enough. A Great day out, came home after 6 hours with an exhausted and happy dog.

Arrived to a busy carpark. We no longer carry change and the machine needs change. Now despite the cash desk being just inside the door and staff being next to machine we had to walk right around the building enter at the far side and walk all the way through to pay to use the car park. They wanted to take our track and trace details and we had to use a mask inside just to pay to be outside. Sorry but this really didn't make sense to us. We don't really enter buildings with people in unless we have to these days. Paid out two pounds and stayed outside but the oath was too steep for me and my mobility problems anyway so we left... But great views if you can.

A beautiful and dramatic landmark, definitely worth visiting.
Buy your tickets from the lovely lady at the kiosk by the RSPB cafe .
There are 400 hundred, steep stone steps down to the bridge to the island, make sure you have appropriate footwear, and take some water, the return ascent is exhilarating and gets the heart pounding.
The views are amazing and the staff so very welcoming and informative. It is a wonderful experience to climb to the top of the light house and stand beneath the working lamp and look out on the Irish sea and the rugged coastline. The weather was exceptionally good when we visited, the sea was like a mill pond, I would imagine that it is just as dramatic and beautiful in other weather conditions.

There are lots of walks in the area and the RSPB cafe is good and reasonably priced.

Perfect day to tackle the challenging steps to the lighthouse. Yes it’s arduous , wear sensible footwear. But it’s SOOOOOO worth it. The staff who run the lighthouse tours are lovely , it’s £7.50 per adult collected at the bottom of the steps , and includes a talk at the very top of the spiral staircase about the history and the current management of the light, fascinating. I am not very keen on confined spaces and I managed it fine, so please don’t let it put you off. The climb back up is not easy, but we took our time and there are seats to have a minute. Lots of banter between all those on the way up and down about whether we were mad to do it!!! It’s all adds to the fun , highly recommend.

Very deceiving at the ticket office. It read "No entry into the lighthouse without a ticket". We purchased tickets and walked down the 410 steps. On arrival at the lighthouse we were told we couldn't enter the lighthouse because of Covid. If we had known this we wouldn't have purchased the tickets in the first place but spent more time walking around the national park. I told them at the ticket office that they should change their sign to "No admittance to the island without a ticket" and make it obvious that the lighthouse was closed. I felt they were taking money under false pretences.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we are sorry you were disappointed following your visit. Unfortunately the lighthouse tower is currently closed to visitors and we are sorry if this was not made clear before you purchased a ticket. We do have signage on site and information on our website to advise of this but will look at making sure this is clear at the point of sale at the ticket booth. We hope that when the tower reopens to the public we will be able to welcome you back for a tour and please do contact us if you would like to discuss your visit further.

Lovely scenery but shame it’s been commercialised. Visited in August 2021, 30 years after my initial visit.

Back in the day no charge, free to walk across as you wanted with dogs etc but now all changed.

Expensive car park half way up the hill, luckily I remember the parking at the top which is free. No longer able to take dogs and ÂŁ20+ for a family to cross a bridge and walk around the outside of a lighthouse is in my opinion to much.

Shame it couldn’t be left as it was when it was all about people enjoying the site and not be taken advantage of.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we are sorry you were disappointed following your visit. Unfortunately due to Health and Safety in relation to the uneven steps, we are unable to permit dogs. The car park is operated by RSPB and whilst we are currently unable to offer our usual tours inside the lighthouse due to social distancing, a reduced fee of ÂŁ4 is currently being charged, with children visiting for free. We hope that when the tower reopens to the public we will be able to welcome you back for a tour and please do contact us if you would like to discuss your visit further.

First to help people. There is a car park just outside the Southstack visitor centre. There is parking for ÂŁ2 for 1hr or ÂŁ5 for more than 5 hrs. To help some lucky folks there is more car park space if you carry on going up the hill. If you are lucky some free space but not a lot. Maybe for 6 Cars. Please, be careful as there are people walking the path and do not speed. I noticed some individuals speeding and this is unacceptable.

The visitor centre has a cafe, gift shop and toilets. The individuals are friendly and reasonable priced.

To walk the island the cost is a donation of ÂŁ5. The lighthouse is closed. This is a guided tour that takes 20 minutes and a slow 15 minutes walk down the long steps. If you do not want to do this, you can walk up a hill to take some amazing pictures around the site.

Overall, I think it is a reasonable place to visit but best experienced in amazing weather.

Be sure to have sensible and comfy shoes for this one, and if you aren't keen on heights I'd recommend avoiding.
The walk to and from the lighthouse is as stunning as the attraction itself and then when you get onto the island, the payment fee is well worth it. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff to tell you all about it and also those funds go to an excellent cause, keeping this magnificent landmark going. Would love to visit again in the bird seasons for some spectacular vantage watching points.
