Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland...

Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland that forms the 'green heart' of Cardiff. The site is managed by Cardiff Council and recently benefitted from a major £5.6M restoration project, supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which restored important historic features, provided new facilities and helped tell the park's fascinating story.

At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor.

Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme.

Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument.

The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round.

Pleasant walk

Just a quick walk through here on our way to the uni. It must be beautiful in season; but a damp Feb does not do it justice.

Took a walk in the middle of February on a Sunday morning, while it was still winter season. Must say that although the sight of the park in spring and autumn would probably be even more awesome and spectacular, it was still a good morning exercise and walk in the park even during winter season. You could see locals taking... More

A rarity to have such a wide expanse of greenery in a city centre, lovely for a walk whatever the weather. Links up to cycle route 6, which takes you up towards Caerphilly.

Visited in February as the daffs and crocus were coming out. Very nice relaxing place to walk with the river on one side and a cafe if your peckish.

This park is lovely, and very large, Lots to see: ruins of abbey, wooden carvings, balance trail, bridge over the river, lovely walks & 3 cafes,to revive you. . Also this is where you can catch the boat to Cardiff Bay, nicer than using the bus! The daffodils weren't quite out when we were there, but will look fab when they are.

Beautiful park. Absolutely stunning I think it's 54 hectares.. we went in the hope of swings and the usual play equipment but we didn't find any here.. but in some ways perfect for other couples without kids..

We went on a day when nothing much was going on but it was a nice park. We had our lunch there. It was nice and clean, lots of benches to sit at, not too close together either so it didn't feel like you were sitting on a stranger's lap. Overall, pretty good.

A gentle stroll through the park prior to an international rugby match. Very peaceful and we saw a Kingfisher fishing in the river.
