Overview
More
On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you'll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape. It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn - a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all. Penllergare Valley Woods are run and maintained by Penllergare Trust, a small, local charity set-up specifically for this purpose. All the income from our coffee shop and car park goes back into the Trust to help us to maintain and further improve the woods. We also rely on donations, grants and our team of volunteers to continue our work. Coffee Shop Open 10am-4pm daily (except Xmas day) Car Park Open 9am-5pm daily (except Xmas day) - Pay & Display

We went here for a wintertime walk and were not disappointed. The woods have plenty of walks with various lengths and the coffee shop was a welcome treat on a cold morning too. Great staff, lovely homemade cakes, dog friendly and good choice of drinks....More

We came here with our son & 2 spaniels, what a lovely surprise. There is a car park, which is charged for, thinks it's roughly £2. There are toilets and a lovely little coffee shop, run by volunteers. This has limited seating inside but has...More

This is such a lovely place for a walk! You really wouldn't believe you're so close to the motorway and other main roads. The work that has gone into transforming it back into such an accessible area must have been huge and to maintain it...More

Hi Andy. Thank you very much for your review. Our volunteers have worked extremely hard over the past 17 years to bring Penllergare back to life as a beautiful woodland garden and their work is ongoing.

Visit for a family walk. Walks are easy going and very scenic. Paths are well maintained but where we walked there were steps so not necessarily wheel or push chair accessible. Very popular coffee shop but not very much seating especially under coverMore

This hidden gem of a place keeps getting better thanks to the work of the friends. The peace and solitude you get from it is priceless. It's going to get more popular but hopefully not commercial?
