The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

Looked forward to visiting this Gaol for a few years and we were not disappointed. Great parking and welcome to the prison. Our tour guide Iain was very knowledgeable funny and engaging. He also dealt with the condemned cell and execution chamber in a dignified way. As someone who has read a few books on hangmen like pierrepoint I was... More

Came here again as my partner wanted to visit and he loved it! Having already visited before I knew what to expect but didn't get to go into the Governors office this time, hope they haven't permanently removed that from the tour as its interesting to see/visit! The tour guide Robert was good and confident just wasn't' as enthusiastic as... More

Did not know this existed. Really enjoyed the whole experience. The history of the jail and walking through the halls, cells and tunnels makes for an interesting evening. Dinner was also well done.

This was a really good tour, expertly done, Lots to see and very interesting. The hanging Cell was a bit of a shock to see, but it's all really well laid out and explained. The café does a really good Latte.

Really impressed .Very informative guide, Robert who told us various stories about the history and set up of the jail. The part we remember most is the condemned cell and execution chamber which Robert explained in detail which made it scary and memorable. A brilliant place to visit .

How often do you get the chance to visit a notorious / historic jail. This places oozes with atmosphere and the tour gives a real up close feel of what life must have been like for inmates and guards. It gives an insight into Northern Ireland troubled modern day history. Our guide was excellent and answered everybody's question. Good value... More
