A gem of a museum particularly if one is interested in Irish history. Some very well explained exhibits which went some way to illustrate how complex the history of Northern Ireland has been. The staff were extremely helpful and were quite prepared to take time to explain things. Pleasant Cafe in which we had a good lunch.

What more could you want for nothing an inside to what happened inside the old gaol. Lovely staff very willing to help. Just up the path way from the StPatricks centre that's another place to visit. Cafe was lovely I liked the old machines they had years ago as an employee of down district council retired I have brought many... More

We stumbled across this place by accident, but it was a lucky accident as soon as we entered the building we got such a pleasant surprise, We were met by a very helpful and knowledgable member of staff who we assumed was comoing to collect our entry fee, but instead we were given an informative history of the building and... Warm welcome and clear introduction followed by brilliant simple creative displays on complex subjects. Staff more than willing to spend time clarifying knotty issues when asked. The prison displays and Downpatrick High Cross areas are very well done. Go here in preference to the St. Patrick Centre if time is limited.

Down museum has a wide variety of exhibits covering the history of the locality from ancient times right up to the recent past. It is housed in an old jail and the series of different buildings adds to the adventure for kids as it is more intriguing to explore. The old jail cells were particularly fascinating. There are also interactive... More

We had the museum on our list of attractions to visit in Downpatrick while we were travelling around Ireland. We were welcomed by a staff member who was very friendly and pointed out the areas to visit. We found the museum very informative on the early history of Down. The old cells in the gaol gave you an insight into... More

We happened upon this wonderful museum. It is free, but they could charge $10 per person, and it would still be a value. Plus, the cafe has wonderful chocolate muffins! The museum has several sections. One: the building was previously used as a jail (gaol) and the exhibits provide information on the cells and other aspects of the jail. There... More

We arrived late for our pre- booked tour deal but staff coped admirably. We started in the coffee bar with a lunch of home made soup or stew with crusty bread or wheaten followed by tea, coffee and tray bakes which were beautifully prepared expertly served by friendly and helpful staff. Our tour guide was Maire and she was fantastic. Very... More
