- Michael DNorth Shields, United Kingdom400 contributionsFabulous museumWe visited this museum in May. On arrival, we were offered an audio guide or a guided tour with a veteran. The museum is set out with the history of the regiment, a silver room, an armory and a dinning room set for a formal dinner. There is also a cafe, memorial garden and re-created trenches. It is brilliant for all ages and the vetran made the visit even more special.Hi Folks Thanks for visiting and thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful review.Written May 28, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 23, 2024

This is a small, well run museum at the far edges of walking distance from the centre of the town. The regiment shows an astonishing history of this famous Scottish regiment. Well worth taking the audio guide but remember to only press the play button just as you are ready to listen otherwise you might miss the first few words. Lovely little garden at the back in which you can take refreshments from the cafe. Even for small children there is enough to keep them amused. Look at the other features of the house which used to belong to famous Scottish artist George Reid.

We had a great guided tour lead by the very capable and engaging John and the personal touch just made the tour so much more enjoyable. There is a lot to take in and some very fine displays showcasing the long history of the regiment.
The Cafe was an added bonus and staff were wonderful.
Definately would recommend if you have a personal connection to the regiment, enjoy military or are just a history buff.

It’s been a while since I visited this museum and there have been a few changes. The museum is fantastic with lots of interesting displays and information. A new outside area which is a mock up of one of the trenches. You need a guide to view this. Roy was our man and wow, he has so much knowledge. He also gave us information when we viewed some of the other rooms and I could have listened to him all day. We only had 2 hours to spare this time which included a visit to the cafe. The staff were very good to us and the food was lovely. This museum is a must for anyone visiting the area but give yourself plenty of time because there is a lot to see. We didn’t get a chance to see the gardens but next time we will allow longer. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. We will be back, meantime, “Stay Cheeky.”

Always great to hear such positive responses.
We all love and have great pride in our museum. The trench has proved most popular and Roy does have a terrific knowledge of The Gordon Highlanders.
We look forward to welcoming you back for another visit showcasing 'Our History with Our Hospitality'.

What a lovely wee museum. We were greeted by everyone we met all of whom are clearly very proud of their Highlander heritage. Displays were interesting, colourful, well laid out and the audio guide was a great addition. Had tea and scone in the beautiful gardens.

I’ve been bringing my children here since they were small . It’s an amazing museum and so personal . I think it’s made them appreciate how hard it actually was in the war . Only niggle I have is the tea room was always run by lovely volunteers -now it seems it runs by another coffee shop and it’s prices reflect that -

Thanks for your continual support of The Gordon Highlanders Museum, we do like the personal touch.
Our cafe is now run as a community partnership between ourselves and a local cafe brand. This has given us assistance especially after being closed for so long. We still have lovely helpful volunteers in all areas of the Museum including the cafe on most days.

After living in Aberdeen for past 19 years we finally made it to the Gordon Highlanders Museum! Booked a family ticket online including a tour guide. Our amazing guide was Bert Innes….a true gentleman. What an experience- Bert was knowledgeable and interesting and captivated us with his stories and facts. Highly recommend a visit!

I always like to visit museums and this museum also seemed interesting to my mother, so I bought tickets for our stay in Aberdeen. It is located outside the center but is easily accessible by public transport. There is a lot to see about the Gordon Highlanders regiment. Some volunteers have even been members. Many museums in the UK are free, but this private museum is not. We didn't mind that at all because it is an interesting museum. Be sure to visit the garden and the museum café.

Visited the museum whilst staying in Montrose, our father and our uncle were both in the Gordon Highlanders, will get them to do some research for us. Found our uncle mentioned in the book St Valarie and the Aftermath.
A lot of very interesting items on show, some film shows and a mock up trench out in the gardens, very informative, you can walk about with hand held eletronic guides at your own pace.
Set in very nice gardens, refreshments available from the cafe and a small gift shop

As I had been at the 1994 Edinburgh Military Tattoo featuring, "Farewell to the Gordons," I wanted to see the museum of a regiment I was already familiar with. It's a nice bus ride from downtown on the 4,5, or 6 bus, Queen's Road is particularly pretty, and a short walk from the bus stop. The building is definitely not what you would picture a military museum being housed in; it's a former home and studio of artist Sir George Reid and is itself worthy of study. They offer an audio guide or a human guide, I went for the latter, a man named Stewart who knew everything there was to know and was the perfect guide: outgoing, friendly and knowledgeable. There are rooms galore stuffed with artifacts dating back to the 18th century. The Gordons fought almost everywhere so most conflicts are documented. One of the little things I noticed was one of the display cases said it was provided by Dame Judi Dench. How's that for having friends in high places? I have been to many, and I mean MANY, British military museums since the Imperial War Museum in London in 1992, and this is certainly one of the top collections. Add to it the cozy setting in a home instead of a huge building and you have a wonderful place to spend a few hours.

Well worth the time and effort. Very informative on the Gordon Highlanders. I did not know what to expect but the facility, information and friendly staff made this a fantastic experience. If you think you might not be interested in the Gordon Highlanders you will be pleased after you experience the museum. I will be go back the next time I am in Aberdeen.
