Interesting, but a bit gruesome

The exhibit focusing on real-life prisoners was very interesting, but may be too harsh for younger children.

Visited this museum to learn more about the local area and it was free admission! The two men were friendly that were running it and were helpful. Trip only lasted about 20 minutes but was interesting!

It is one of the oldest buildings of Aberdeen, named as the Tolbooth Museum. It is also said to be the most well preserved jail house of Aberdeen. Take a tour into the museum and you will come across facts related to the history of the city and stories related to the crimes and punishment given in earlier centuries. You... More

What a great way to understand a bit much re of the history of Scotland. It is a free museum and it gives you a brief overview of the past 400 years of incarceration in Aberdeen and Scotland in general. Great staff members as well!

Great if you are a traveller looking to get some history on Aberdeen. There are a lot of stairs to climb, but there are stops on the way up. There is waxworks, not an issue for me but not to everyone's taste but can be avoided, the rest is a worthwhile visit. Central location.

Climb the steep spiral stairs in an ascent to old Aberdeen gaol history and see and experience prison life. Descend through the rooms to make your escape. Watch you don't miss the entrance to this hidden (behind facade of newer building) museum

I went to visit yesterday during some free time. The building is smaller than it looks on the inside and you can get around it pretty quickly. It's a very interesting place that os full of history. Totally worth a visit. However, there are very narrow and steep stairs. I'm not sure if there is wheelchair accessibility, but I thought... More

The history of the penal side of the city. We visited twice and found it most interesting. Staff were helpful explaining the details and we were impressed with the displays. Maybe not for youngsters and you must be agile - steps and twisty bits. For us a must see.

Inside is not at all what you expect from the outside as this building has evolved over time. There's n interesting model which shows this and, rather than being a tollbooth it's most recent use was to house dungeons. There are steep steps - two leading to separate dungeons along narrow and low corridors. The life stories of some of the... More

Good use of the building as keeps the atmosphere of the past and of conditions of jails and crime from earlier days.
