Amazing little museum
Oct. 2020
tucked away in the tiny village of Ruthwell this is a fascinating place to visit. Full of artifacts including old ledgers from back in the day. The curator was very informative providing lots of interesting facts on how the savings bank came into being.

Wonderful

Saw the signpost on the way to Dumfries and decided to visit the following day. Arrived in the hamlet and saw the sign for the museum. Not what we expected at all. We rang the bell and were admitted into this tiny cottage type building by a wonderful friendly lady who gave us a history of the world’s first savings bank. We read about its founder, links with church , saw various displays and were shown the piggy and savings bank collectors tins collection . And it’s all free. The lady then told us about various other touristy things to do in the area. Museum was excellent and the lady working there was truly amazing.

A little gem hidden away in the Dumfries countryside
Feb. 2020
It's a low house in the village of Ruthwell. You turn up, park outside and ring the bell. Immediately the door is opened and you are treated to a fascinating personal talk on all the exhibits in this amazing museum. Not just the origin of savings banks, also the life history of Henry Duncan who deserves to be much better known for all his good works.

Saw the brown signs on side of the road and decided to look up winter opening hours and visit, we only had few hours spare before meeting friend so times fit perfect the place was brilliant being a bit of a money geek made it even better. However my husband who never got my geek money thing did not want to do but loved it, Kay was so knowledgable explained everything to us and made talk / tour as inclusive as she could get my son who has additional need to touch the money and involving him in conversation and the exhibit, Kay even shown me some anne wrote ledges they were really interesting the place was fab we loved it well worth visit. We also visited the church where the cross rest but to find out about the cross you need to visit the museum. We will be back to visit again thanks for taking the time to show us your passion Kay, sorry that should be doing your job lol which you clearly enjoy 😀

What a find

We would never have visited this museum if it was not for the fantastic reviews. And yes it lived up to our expectations. Its location is off the beaten track but it definitely worth the effort. Mhairi our guide was excellent and she was able to answer all our questions. Absolutely fascinating

Following excellent communication via Facebook regarding opening days and times we were today warmly welcomed - our dog included :0)
The lady (I apologise I forget her name) was lovely and very knowledgeable telling us lots of interesting information and involving all members of our party in the conversation. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend.

I have seen the signs for this Museum but never got there till now
Aug. 2019
Being a retired HGV Driver had seen the signposts for this museum but never been to visit till now

We were staying in Dumfries for four days and on the first morning we made our way to see the establishment.
A lady called Kay answered the door and invited us in. She welcomed us and asked us if we wold prefer her to tell us about the place or to wander round on our own.

We took her invitation to be our guide and it was very informative story.

If you are in the area we strongly invite to to make the visit yourselves you wont regred it I can assure you.

The museum is free to visit but you can make a donation if you so please

Many thanks for your review, it really does help people to see the more out of the way places when they can read something positive. We are really pleased you took the time to come and see what the signs are about after passing them for so many years.

Trust Me

This is such a friendly little museum and the guides are very accommodating and knowledgeable. As one of only three museums in the country dedicated to banking, and in such a forgotten corner of the country, it’s well worth making a detour for. And it’s even free to visit.

A great little museum with a lot to offer

We saw this on a brown sign heading up to Dumfries at the start of a 12 day holiday to Scotland. As we both worked for TSB at one time or another it was an obvious place to stop. In the end we spent well over an hour in the small building chatting to one of the Curators about the history of TSB, the role of Henry Duncan in founding the bank and the position of it now. It was marvellous to hear that the revived TSB has taken it over from Lloyds and that the curators are actually employed by the bank itself. Long may that continue. The staff are very knowledgeable and will happily guide you through the history, or let you browse at your leisure. We had the "tour" and learned much we didn't know. the collection of memorabilia in the back room is truly great. We would say to anyone passing go find it and look into the history of banking for the working man rather than the rich.

I found out a lot about the founding of banking which was so very interesting and would definitely recommend going here, to the little village of Ruthwell. Always wondered where the "piggy bank" came from, well you will find out here!, and it makes sense now that I know. The curator was so helpful and knowledgeable, Fab.
