Description:

Cross the River Dee by boat to visit this enchanting castle on its own...

Cross the River Dee by boat to visit this enchanting castle on its own island. Once the bustling base of its creator, Archibald the Grim, it is now an ideal spot for exploring, picnicking and perhaps, painting. The island is rich with wildflowers in summer; you might also see ospreys and otters hunting in the river.

The castle was besieged by King James II for two months in 1455, and fell after the king bribed the garrison to surrender.

Nice walk down to the jetty where you pick up the boat for the 30 yard journey across the river to see the castle, unfortunately it's closed at end of October, but still a great backdrop to the landscape and ideal for a photo stop

After visiting Sweetheart Abbey we were recommended to visit Threave Castle, we were so thankful for this recommendation as we loved getting the boat over to the island. A definite must for families or couples.

This is fantastic experience. You walk about a mile through lovely fields, on path, take a wee boat across and find out all about the Douglas the the infighting of theScots , way back. Last boat about 4pm

This Castle is a worthwhile visit. So much history in this building and it has a much deserved place in Scotlands historic past. A great location, a place to relax and absorb the atmosphere.

Beautiful scenery, lovely gentle walk with wide angle views of a larger than normal Scottish tower house type castle and a wee boat trip! The staff are wonderful, very helpful and as it was quiet the kids got an extra wee jaunt up the river. Great place for a picnic after a game of Draughts on the giant board laid... More

A nice castle in a stunning location and full of history. The castle is on an island and requires a trip across the water by boat which just adds to the experience

What a lovely hidden gem! Our visit included first class staff and a beautiful historic landmark. We were greeted by a friendly and informative reception. The walk to the castle was beautiful with a well kept path. Upon arrival to the dock we were promptly met by the boats man Malcom. What a fascinating story he has to tell and... More

The only reason this doesn't receive a full 5 out of 5 is because I didn't get to see any Otters! A little unfair bearing in mind the warm, friendly staff and the stunning location but I had so looked forward to seeing one for so long! Of course there are no guarantees but.... Set on an island with access... More
