Wonderful garden
Jun. 2021
The house is only open at the weekend at the moment. The garden is open via the side entrance with an honesty box for money. One way system round the paths but this doesnt detract from seeing the planting, flowers etc. Seats have been left so you can still rest and admire. Hand sanitizing station are plentiful too.

Masterclass in Design
May 2021
The House was closed so only visited the garden but what a gem it was. It was a masterclass in design and interest within a relatively small garden. Covid signs and one way system worked well. Several clearly separate garden rooms with masses of interesting plants many in flower although the wisteria was only just starting to open. It will be glorious in full summer. Lovely views from the bottom of the garden over the estuary and lots of interesting stone features, seats and even pond. I was amazed at how full of plants it was. My favourite of all the gardens we visited.

Fabulous house and gardens, loved it!!
Sep. 2020 • Solo
I went on a very wet Sunday afternoon. The staff are very polite and friendly, and quite rightly proud of the house and gardens. Some beautiful paintings are hung inside, I particularly liked the studio, very evocative. However my favourite part were the gardens, so peaceful, and felt like was stepping back in time

Great visit to Glasgow Boy Hornel's house where we saw his fabulous paintings & collections. There is also an artist in residence & his beautiful Japanese gardens. We'll worth a visit.

A Very Special Place - Especially after Lockdown!
May 2021
Absolutely superb garden – especially on a sunny morning. Can’t recommend it too highly. The entrance to the garden is down the side of the house and as soon as you enter through the door in the brick wall there are very clear laminated signs about the one-way system to follow and Covid safety measures throughout, which apply to the house too, that has to be entered from the street to maintain a one-way system there. The planting in the garden is superb and it is simply beautiful. There was a great deal to enjoy despite the late Spring this year, with many seats and a wonderful view of the boats moored in the river from the bottom of the garden, that the artist E A Hornell used to enjoy. I was surprised to see certain plants flowering so early, despite the weather, and just wished we were there later in the year when all the wisteria would be in flower. Even the vegetable plot was full of interest, and beautifully kept. The Gardener was happy to answer questions and was rightly proud of his achievements. Sitting in this beautiful garden after lockdown was balm for the soul.
We’d booked an 11am tour of the house online, and received a warm welcome from a knowledgeable lady on the door who explained the measures taken to ensure social distancing. I would recommend buying a guidebook to read all about E A Hornell, his travels round the world and his paintings, many of which are displayed in his purpose-built gallery. Don't miss this special place. Fantastic value for money too.

Garden only
Sep. 2020 • Couples
We stumbled across here while in the area and enjoyed a gentle walk around the garden. Free to look round as the house is closed, the gardens are well laid out, just past its best for the season, we could imagine that in both spring and summer the garden would be beautiful and full of colour.
