Neighbourhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

- George M2 contributionsGreat start to a week-end break in Edinburgh2 out of the 3 comedians were quite good. We enjoyed our Saturday night show, yet the venue is in a small underground with limited seats, so make your way there early to grab some seats. The bar had a good variety of drinks and was quick enough to serve a few between intervals.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 15, 2023
- DefmerrOswestry, United Kingdom1 contributionRed Raw LaughsFun night out whilst visiting Edinburgh. Red Raw was a good mix of laughs and some mild open mic discomfort. Amy Matthews kept the evening moving effortlessly…Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 14, 2023
- Natalie86 contributionsSeating situation is such a let downI came here a few years ago and had an enjoyable night so decided to book a show again. We walked past a huge queue of folk just before opening time and couldn't understand why but realised when entering that the stage and seating had been moved since last time and that you aren't guaranteed a seat despite booking months in advance. I was happy enough arriving later as I knew from last time there were rows of seats for everyone with a ticket. Even some coat racks would have been good instead of having to put our stuff on the floor. Disappointed that this wasn't made clearer on the website and unfortunately had to leave early as couldn't stand for 2 plus hours. No reflection on the comedians who were brilliant though. The venue shouldn't be selling more tickets than there is space for people.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023
- Jack10 contributionsFantastic night out, but get there early. The comedy was one of the best we’ve been to, compare was terrific right from the staff and the staff were very friendly. My only criticism would be the lack of seats. Those lucky enough to get a seat have a great view with a table, though about 60% of the tickets they sell will inevitably have to stand up. We arrived 40 mins early and the only place we could get was behind a pillar which was a real shame. If you’re prepared to rock up before the doors open, and get bag a seat nice and early, you’re in for an absolutely terrific evening. I think the venue would benefit from rows of seats, and losing the tables, personally. Either that, or sell less tickets.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 12, 2023
- karenWigan, United Kingdom10 contributionsAmazing night! Super friendly place to visit xxxFrom the minute we walked to the door we were welcomed so warmly, so sorry I didn’t take the persons name! We were so lucky to visit on a night Gareth Mutch was filming, it’s our first visit Edinburgh so made it all the more special. Again I apologise I am so rubbish with names but the person that was on first was hilarious. Then Gareth came on and we belly laughed all the way through! What a top night , so much value for money!!!! Definitely worth a visit if you go to Edinburgh, loved every minute! XxxVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 28, 2024
- JungleDesertCityHoboEdinburgh, United Kingdom31 contributionsBrilliant.Well I can honestly what a belter of an evening. Very well planned out and absolute value for money. The compere (Amy I think ) was brilliant. Very sharp clever and hilarious and although all acts were well above average special accolades must go to the absolutely brilliant show by Ian Coppinger. Words fail me as I was in tears of laughter from start to finish. The venue and staff were awesome. My only disgust was that whilst the world has woken up to fake woke delusional more than two gender myths. This venue still allowed people to choose their bathroom. Come on Edinburgh, it’s just wrong to allow anyone into whatever toilet they so desire.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 3, 2024
- Charlie H4 contributionsRedraw 5/02/24Great night of comedy from RedRaw. The host George Fox was hilarious and had great crowd engagement, including myself. All 8 acts were brilliant and funny. Only complaint is my stomach and chest hurt due to laughing so muchVisited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 5, 2024
- The Owl ReviewsEdinburgh, United Kingdom198 contributionsAnti Valentines DayCame along with my partner on Valentines Day. She's pregnant, and they managed to reserve a table for us, which was incredibly kind. All the staff in the venue are also lovely and professional, even when dealing with people who've had a bit too much to drink. The acts on this night were quite good, I had a really nice time, and I've always recommended The Stand in Edinburgh!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 16, 2024

Great view of stage, table was handy for the bar and accessible loo. Happy to report that bar prices were decent and something to smile about.Hi there, thanks for the lovely review! - Red Gloves Writing4 contributionsBelly Laugh Funny!!A really great night! Doors open at 7.30pm, show starts at 8.30 and finishes around 10.15pm, with a 20 minute interval after the first act. Compare was the funniest act of the night. Two of the 3 acts were belly-laugh funny, the other didn't really win the room at all. Felt really sorry for them! It's nice that all phones have to be switched off or put on silent and you're not allowed to film performances. Venue holds about 100 - 120 but only seating for about 70, so get there early! We got there at 7.10pm and were about 40th in the queue!! Book in advance as it is fully booked most nights so no just turning up!! Definitely a great night though!!Thanks for such a thorough review! The in-depth runtimes will no doubt help others looking to visit. Glad you appreciated our efforts to make the experience one-of-a-kind for the people in the room. Going to The Stand on a Saturday night was like stepping back in time to an era when it's ok to get a laugh by relying on lazy stereotypes, imitating disabled people and going on about how it's not PC to do all of that any more. A shockingly backward set of performances by comics who've not moved with the times. Heather Ross was an exception but got the shortest slot of all.
Add the fact that the venue sells at least twice as many tickets as it has seats and its definition of "standing room" means in passageways, by the bar and generally places where you're going to be jostled, have people stand in front of you, and have nothing to lean on for the two hour plus show.
Booking tickets in advance at £17 each we expected to be at least moderately comfortable and reasonably entertained. The Stand failed on both counts.
A complete joke of a venue (and not in the way we'd hoped!) which ought to be taken over by more enlightened management with ambitions to give people a good time rather than take money off tourists who don't know better.

We have been to the showcase show on a Saturday night twice now and both times left in stiches. The acts are always top quality and really funny, and the show is intimate and very engaging.
The food & drink is well priced and more than reasonable despite how popular the place is. For the Saturday show you need to arrive well over an hour earlier if you want a decent seat, or a seat at all as it does get very busy. The location of the club is a little out of the way but only a 5-10 minute walk from all the decent bars so not bad at all really.

I had really high expectations as I had seen great reviews but was so disappointed. We went to the Saturday show which was £20 a head and I’m sorry to say it wasn’t worth the price. I have seen some of the best comedians in the UK and paid a similar price or less and been in stitches. It wasn’t the same here - one of the three acts was not funny, the other two were ok, the host was very funny. I would definitely not go back unless it was to see an act I know would be worth the cost.
One positive - they had Thistly Cross cider on tap! It’s also a small intimate venue so great if you do like the acts and like audience participation.

Had a cracking night here on Friday, the food for a tenner was more than adequate.
The acts were very good indeed, its small and intimate
Drinks were easy to get, with plenty of barmen on to serve you quickly and the prices were reasonable.
One slight complaint, the green haired chap on the door was a bit pissy with the guests, especially if you didn't listen to him drone on about the clubs rules which are on your ticket - cheer up misery bollo cks

We went to see the best of Scottish comedy and it was a great night! The host Jay was really funny, got the audience involved but didn’t embarrass anybody. All three acts were really different but all really funny. The drinks in there are cheap, all the staff are super friendly and helpful. Only in Edinburgh for 2 nights and we’re going again tonight! A great night all round 10/10 recommend

My fiancé and I went to The Stand comedy Club in Edinburgh to watch the Sunday night Bona Fide show. We loved it! Jay Lafferty was welcoming and hilarious and really knows how to amp up a crowd, Krystal Evans was the first act and was a great start to the show, Marjolein Robertson was an amazing storyteller and had us in stitches with laughter and the last act of the night, Gareth Waugh had such self-deprecating humour that ended the show brilliantly. Thank you for a great night!

I visited on the last Monday before Christmas, this was apparently the last show of that kind until the New year so it was a special one, not sure if they always say something like that or not! The host was great and kept us all entertained inbetween acts. The waitress was quick with drinks. The atmosphere was good and for £5 I would definitely go back.

Some incredible comedians, an awesome night-out and a place you must visit when in Edinburgh. Not only was it entertaining, but it was a great supportive environment for emerging performers which felt wholesome to be a part of. It's a nice environment, very crowded when I visited, and the stools can be quite uncomfortable so try and get the seats if you struggle with sitting for long periods of time.
