About
Enjoy a visit to the past and experience what life was like for the Lamonts family in 18th and 19th century New Town. The Georgian era produced some of Scotland’s most distinctive architecture. In the late 1700s, this grand townhouse was at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town development. The house was designed by acclaimed architect Robert Adam and was a true statement of luxury in an era of enlightenment, for those who could afford it. The house has been magnificently restored to show a typical Edinburgh New Town house of the late 18th and early 19th century. The fine collections of period furniture, porcelain, silver and glass reflect the Lamonts’ lifestyle and the social and economic context of the time. The kitchen and servants’ room give a glimpse of the arduous ‘below stairs’ life of the servants, who made the Lamonts’ elegant lifestyle possible.

Neighbourhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

Well-done experience away from the Royal Mile!
We throughly enjoyed our visit to the Georgian house. The experience starts with a wonderful 15-minute film that has actors portraying a day in the life at the house in the 1800s. This gives perfect context for your self-guided tour as you walk from room to room. Not to mention, a staff member was stationed in each room and all were very excited to share their knowledge with visitors. For only £12, this was a great way to spend an hour and a half in Edinburgh and take a break from the busyness of the Royal Mile!
Hello, Thank you for pointing out we are a great way to spend an hour away from the busy Royal Mile. We really appreciate the kind comments. Thanks again

A guided tour is highly recommended!
Volunteer guide Allan is a highly engaging and interactive tour guide that made the era and house come alive for our family with two children aged 10 and 13. He involved everyone in the tour and was highly knowledgeable about everything in the house and Edinburgh in the Georgian era. If you can time your visit at the time of a guided tour, I would highly recommend it. Don’t miss the video on the top floor that recreates how the house was lived in at the time by the residents. Thank you Allan for a highly memorable tour today!
Hello, Thank for for this amazing review. We are so glad you enjoyed the tour and house. We will pass on your kind words to our tour guide Allan. Thanks again

    Tahnee was wonderful!
Tahnee guided us back to the 18th century. She asked questions and hit the points we were interested. It was so much fun for my college-aged daughters to play the old piano. The basement rooms were just like in Downton Abbey. A quiet and informative visit!
Hello, Thank you for this lovely review. Tahnee loves to point out the servants bells and comparing them to Downton Abbey. We will pass on your kind words to her. Thank You

    Visiting with a child
Visited yesterday with my young granddaughter. The staff helped her pick an outfit so that she could tour the House dressed in Georgian costume. We enjoyed the film telling the story of the lives of the people who lived there. Staff were really great and told her stories about how things were for children back then. She got home and told the rest of the family all about it. Everyone was so patient & helpful. We will definitely be visiting more properties soo.
Hello, Thank you for this wonderful review, we are glad your granddaughter had a fun time and got to dress up in one of our 18th century costumes. Thanks again !

Life in the Georgian era brought to life
Built in 1796, the Georgian House in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town is a worthwhile vist. It's best to start at the top floor with the introductory film, and work your way down the floors. The staff are all lovely, they will help bring the house to life and answer any questions. I especially liked the first flushing loo! Even the lady in the gift shop explains what the basement was used for. The Raeburn exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of his death is especially good.
Hello, Thank you so much for this wonderful review. We are glad you enjoyed the first flushing loo ! Thanks again !

A glimpse into how the upper crust lived
This house is far more than just a collection of beautiful art and objects. There is a self guided tour option, but take the guided tour for the reasons behind why the objects are there, how they were used and why, and stories about the family - the excellent guide (sadly, I forgot his name!) made it way way way more interesting than just looking at stuff.
Hello, Thank for the lovely review, We shall pass on your kind comments to the staff and volunteers.

    Fantastic visit!
Definitely one of the highlights of our visit to Edinburgh, for several reasons. Georgian House is located on the west side of New Town, a very interesting area not (yet) overrun by mass tourism. The house itself is very interesting and gives a glimpse into different aspects of life in 18th century Edinburgh. It was well worth starting -as recommended- with the informative introductory film on the top floor. The various rooms including: drawing room, dining room, bedchamber and kitchen - feature objects and furniture from that period. The newspaper articles, amongst other fascinating objects, were very worth seeing and studying. What really sets Georgian House sets apart from other comparable (historic) houses is the fantastic staff. Not only did they provide us with a lot of information, but they were also very friendly and clearly enjoyed their work. As a bonus, one of the friendly ladies on the ground floor gave us a tip for lunch (thanks for this!). All in all, a must visit when in Edinburgh.
Thank you for the lovely and detailed review ! We really appreciate you mentioning our hard working team of staff and volunteers, We shall pass on your kind comments to them. Thank you for visiting.

    What a surprise!
I had found some information about the Georgian House on the internet, did not know exactly what to expect and thought at first glance, well, £ 12 to see some historical rooms - that is a lot of money. In the end every penny was worth the experience, though. A short movie gets you into the spirit of the time and the everyday life of the people. In every room there is a very friendly and well-informed volunteer who lets you dive into the house, its inhabitants, their lives and stories. The volunteers can answer any questions. I enjoyed conversations that made me feel like a visiting friend and not like a tourist. Outstanding.
Hello and thank you for this amazing review, we really appreciate the time taken to write such a wonderful review of the house. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit. Have a nice day.

    A wonderful afternoon
Had the lovely surprise of finding this gem on an afternook walk through picturesque Edinburgh. Called in and was given an impromptu tour by Tahnee who couldn't have been nicer. Would definitely recommend, a nice break away from the busy main town.

Put this at the top of your list!
The house is interesting and I loved the feeling that I was walking around in history (or at least a film set) but it’s the guides who make it. They are volunteers and full of interesting facts about the house and life in the era. A great way to learn about Edinburgh life at the time!

Great museum explaining the details of the lead up and aftermath of the Jacobite uprising and English response. The guided tour of the battlefield is a must-do in my opinion. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Cafe was nice too. Plenty of parking available at a reasonable price. Highly recommend.

Tahnee was an excellent guide, providing a lot of information on the life of the house’s inhabitants, as well as the birth of the new town more generally. Such an interesting insight into Georgian life.

Great place to visit and the volunteers made a lasting impression ! The tour starts with a nice film that shows the family that used to live at number 7 in the various rooms. This really helps to bring the place to life. But how we did enjoy the background info from the volunteers in each room that knew so much about the place. This is a must do for visitors to Edinburgh.

Very enjoyable and informative experience. We learned a lot about the history of Edinburgh and it's people. The three guides, Susan, Cameron and Tahnee were excellent.

We found this town home to be very beautiful and had such a warm feeling. The neighborhood is so nice and quiet and it gives you an idea of what it might have been like during that time. I love the Bridgerton vibes as well. It would have been nice to see the attic level, though it was closed. The staff was very friendly as well.

Enthusiastic guides and lovely home -- but US travelers, if you've been to similar vintage homes (late 1700s to early 1800s) in the States -- Philadelphia, DC, Virginia, etc, this is very similar.

We visited with our children after a visit to Gladstones Land on the Royal Mile.
It was a very interesting walk round the property. The staff on site were very helpful and knowledgeable.
