Went here with friends. Both boys in the group are 10. They loved it. Very educational but done in a way as to keep them interested. My son loved the geology section. Lots to see & learn. The volcano & movie at the end all about space were my favourite bits. A really enjoyable day out. We spent around around... More

If you are local to edinburgh buy an annual Explorers Pass as gives you unlimited entry. I would say if you were visiting as a one off you may find expensive for what you get but hey that is how the tourism industry works.

My two children went during the October school holidays. They loved the vibrating time machine, the simulated plane trips and learning about the world, how it was formed and the various locations.

This was a great visit and very interesting for the four of us; myself, my husband, and two young adult daughters. We're all geology buffs, so got a lot out of this visit. The layout is very well done with lots to see and is designed to allow visitors to view it all but also to keep folks moving in... More

Interesting science museum focussing on natural history and environmental science. The majority of exhibits are screen presentations and cinematic mini documentaries but they are well put together and short and fun enough to keep the attention.

Interactive museum more suited to younger people and children. Ideal for a school trip visit! Interesting exhibits and a really nice show at the end of your visit.

I really enjoyed my visit to Dynamic Earth while in Edinburgh over Christmas after studying tectonics recently I was very much interested in the tour and the different rooms and 3D elements such as the earthquake and flight. I would not recommend the tour for young children as they were quite frankly needing to be entertained in other ways and... More

We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and pretty much had place to ourselves. My kids are 6 and 9 and are interested in space, nature etc so i thought they would enjoy. To be honest I was bored half way through and so were the kids. The tour is made up of several zones and on entering each one you... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
