Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- KC_AdventuringAtlanta, Georgia57 contributionsGreat museum in a fascinating Edinburgh house. This is a fascinating museum in an even more fascinating building. Originally, multiple houses, the buildings were connected in the 16th century. From counting the rooms on the museum map, the public rooms appear to encompass about 50 of the original rooms. We talked with one of the staff and learned about how the building had been connected and then extended over the years, and later rented out to many individuals. At one point in the 19th century over 300 people lived in the building. The museum collection tells the story of the growth of Edinburgh including the designing of the New City. Great experience!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 28, 2023
- Isabel43 contributionsLovely informative museumWe spent a lovely hour wandering around this beautiful old building and museum. The staff gave us such a warm welcome and explained the exhibits and the layout to us very well. We particularly enjoyed the sections on the old and new town of Edinburgh with lots of detailed information cards explaining the city planning. If you’re in the area, would highly recommend stopping by for a look around. Thanks so much!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 21, 2023
- Alan304Cranford, New Jersey2,239 contributionsSurprisingly largeThe exterior of the museum is unassuming. There are MANY different rooms, each with a specific topic. The organization allows you to linger in rooms of interest and quickly scan rooms of lesser interest. It is likely that you will find enough content interesting to justify your visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 27, 2023
- KandNAustralia123 contributionsA really memorable and enjoyable museum experienceWe spent a fabulous couple of hours at this wonderful Museum - so many treasures to see and the building itself is a wonder. The museum staff member Ianoa had terrific knowledge of everything about the museum, the items on display and the building itself. Thank you so much for a really memorable experience.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023
- silje H73 contributionsFree and small, but niceI found this museum while touring Outlander places on the Royal Mile. When I came in, I had to ask if they were open because the staff were chatting with each other and no one greeted me. It has fascinating rooms with great history, nothing overwhelming. B +. Great place to spend 30 minutes to an hour of your day.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten February 29, 2024
- Kathryn654Poole, United Kingdom45 contributionsBetter than we expected! Really worth a visit! My daughter and I had a brilliant time here and could have spent much more time here than we had! Lots of interesting things to see, with clear explanations, and a lovely craft / interactive area for children. Definitely worth a visit, we would go back to see some of things we didn’t have time to see. Staff were really friendly and helpful.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 10, 2024
- Janet SWilliamsburg, Virginia1,107 contributionsA delightful small, free, museumThe museum was right across the street from the bus stop. It's bright yellow color is hard to miss. If you are mobility challenged, know there is a flight of circular stone stairs that must be navigated both entering and exiting the museum. Most of the floors are fairly level with only a couple of steps. There is seating in most areas. There are a lot of stairs to the courtyard and we could not find a way of exiting without re-climbing them. There is quite a variety of objects in the museum and a lot of it seemed disjointed to me. Note that right across the street is The People's Story which is also small, free, and has a lift.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2024
- Beverley R15 contributionsInteresting museum in a quirky, squeaky building!Planned to visit as part of the Hop on & off sightseeing bus tours. Interesting historical account of Edinburgh from the old town to decline & development of 'new' Town. Would recommend especially if it is a first visit to the City. Room guides friendly. Museum is free but donations accepted.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 30, 2024
- Joasi23South Yorkshire, United Kingdom1,996 contributionsHidden gemWe loved this almost as much as the much hyped castle . The building itself was interesting with all the original features . Displays , although rather haphazardly organised were fascinating , and far better than what we had expected . All free ! So happy to spend in the reasonably priced gift shop after our visit .Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2024
- Gill OAscot, United Kingdom664 contributionsWell worth a visitA free museum in central Edinburgh. We didn’t expect it to be as good as it turned out to be! Very interesting and laid out in a slightly haphazard fashion but we learned a lot about the history of this beautiful city. Takes around an hour to cover pretty much all the exhibits. There’s a special room for children too with lots of activities for them, always a bonus! Centrally located on the Royal Mile.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 2, 2024

This is a pretty bog standard collection of stuff in cases with labels. Not much to interact with or to engage the kids.
We arrived ten minutes before the final entry time. I naively assumed this would give us time to look around. As it was, we were followed around the entire museum by a lady jangling keys, locking doors the moment we went through and even turning the lights off while we were still trying to look at stuff. I appreciate they need to close, but we were going through quite quickly as it was, and if they’re so desperate to get people out they should bring the last entry time forwards fifteen minutes.
Overall it was as unwelcoming a museum as I’ve ever visited.

A beautiful building both inside and out filled with many interesting pieces of history. We spent a good 30 minutes looking round the museum discovering interesting facts about life in Edinburgh and the local area. Staff were very friendly and helpful and it was free to enter.

Well worth a look if you want to find out about the history of Edinburgh. We stumbled upon the Museum whilst walking up the Royal Mile and very glad we did.
The Museum has so much to see in it and goes into a lot of detail of the history of Edinburgh. George, one of the museum attendants, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the pieces on display.
There is so much to see we are going to make a second trip back (at least!) to see the rest of the pieces there.

We really enjoyed this museum, its not what it appears from the outside, from the outside it looks very small. On entering what a surprise how big the museum is, its spread over varias floors. Very imformative and a great way to see the history of the city.
All staff very friendly and informative, we nearly didnt enter as we assumed it was just a room to see, what a surprise, I would definatly give it a visit.

When we saw the Museum of Edinburgh on a stroll down Canongate we thought we would have a look in (its free after all), now we love Edinburgh its a beautiful, historic city with much to tell, so we were expecting a lot of exhibits and information telling the history of Edinburgh.
Now some parts of the city's history are covered but it is not a comprehensive timeline of exhibits and information, far from it, it's a collection of random items really, glassware, silverware, some info on the New Town.
Found the display about Douglas Haig interesting.
Overall a little disappointing

Sat opposite this museum and thought nothing much about it as we thought it looked like it was a small building. On getting up from our hard earned break we decided we would go and have a look, well this little place certainly did not disappoint it is certainly bigger than it looks! Once inside this museum is free and it has loads to see and it is very interesting. Staff are friendly and helpful, cleaning all the time.
Don’t just walk past this museum go and have a look for yourselves it is very interesting and I will go back.

Huntly House is an atmospheric, wood panelled maze of fine rooms which are a testament to the wealthy merchants and landowners of the city and to the ordinary citizens who often had a more difficult life.
The collection is vast. First class glass (sorry, crystal) and a superb stash of silver.
Fine Lothian pottery and ceramics. Historical documents like the National Covenant and New Town Plans live side by side with Greyfriars Bobby's collar , bowl and bust.
Staff were so friendly and informed , even about the 'Gardez Loo' display.
There's also a lovely small courtyard and garden area for the Outlander fans.

I was attracted to visit by the "Windrush Exhibition" which I'm afraid was insultingly poor. Less floor space than a sweety counter in a corner shop, just a few poems, virtually no pictures, little history or colour. If this was a highschool project I'd give it a C for poor effort. I'm the daughter of that generation and the exhibition told visitors little of the vibrant lives and journeys of the proud Windrush Scots.

Absolutely the best value and history on the royal mile. This quaint unassuming dwelling is offered by donation only. There are attendants throughout and the artifacts elicit curiosities and questions that pair well with visiting the Edinburgh Castle.

How much time approximately should you spend visiting the museum?
Written April 22, 2017
Depending on your interest I would recommend at least 1 hour
But you also can spend many hours there if you also watch the videos and so on
Written April 23, 2017
If you're looking for something that's easy to spot on the likes of Google or Trip Advisor maps, it's just opposite the entrance to Canongate Kirk - the only green space shown along the Royal Mile
