Walked into a tiny reception area, cluttered with signs but with no obvious direction to find anything. Despite our obvious confusion the guard said "hi" but nothing else. We found the "art" dull and uninspiring. We were so bored we didn't even go the impressionist...More

You have to visit this beautiful and historic gallery. The selection of paintings and the layout of the building is wonderful and it can fill a couple hours during a busy day.

Brilliant, beautiful and rich in history. Not over run with tourists when I was there. The collection of art is astounding and at times awe inspiring. Don't miss this beautiful building full of treasures.

An absolutely magnificent collection of inspiring artwork. One could spend hours here in quiet contemplation.

The curators of the gallery are to be congratulated on their careful selection of pictures representing European middle ages, renaissance, Victorian and of course Scottish painters. Although it can easily be done in an hour, but many visitors risk hankering after a second visit.

Beautiful building and fantastic exhibits. Very interactive, would be really good for kids and family’s. It being FREE is a bonus.

We did not appreciate the collection as much as others, to be honest, but it is nicely arranged and free. There was a concert which was fantastic.

Having a day out in Edinburgh we popped into the gallery and ended up spending three hours. There is a restaurant and shop, but best of all is the collection. It is superb and well laid out. A must for any art lovers.

Well worth a visit. Round about twenty rooms to view, with an eclectic range from Old Masters, through to Pre-Raphelites and Impressionists. Allow about 2 hours, also lovely cafe area and gift shop.

This is a fabulous place to visit, it is free and the artwork is amazing to see. We saved this stop for the last day before we trained out. It was well worth the visit, seeing all the different art was something we had never...More

Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street

But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views
