Established in 2010, Edinburgh Photography Tours is the number one ranked photography tour in Edinburgh, all of Scotland and the number one ranked photography tour in Europe. James Christie is a world renowned and internationally published, professional photographer and he will take you on a four hour walking / photography tour around all the major attractions in Edinburgh's vibrant and famous historic Old Town. Edinburgh Photography Tours Limited were accredited with an "excellent standard" grading by Visit Scotland, Scotland's national tourist board. In addition we have were awarded TripAdvisor's prestigious Certificate Of Excellence for the year 2015, our fourth year in a row winning this award. We are also ranked as number one of all tours in Edinburgh by USA today. James Christie has established himself as one of the leading photographic instructors in the world with plaudits from all over the globe.

As a native of Edinburgh, James will provide an historical account of each attraction visited. His goal is to help you get the best from your camera (SLR, DSLR, Bridge, Compact, even your smart-phone) and show you how to compose professional and memorable shots of Edinburgh. If your camera has the ability to shoot in manual mode, James is confident that after this tour, you will never go back to any of the programmable modes ever again. James shows you how to take each photograph and reviews each shot and guarantees that each participant will take home stunning photographs of Edinburgh that can be displayed and enjoyed for many years to come.

The tours are aimed at all levels of photographer, from absolute beginner to experienced professional. James does not use confusing jargon, preferring to explain things in a simple to understand manner. James is friendly, patient, polite and encouraging.

Edinburgh Photography Tours were established in 2010, the first photography tour of its kind anywhere in the world. We work very hard to ensure our clients have a first class experience on our tours and we continue to strive for excellence every day.

The tours start at 10am daily (Monday - Sunday) and last approximately 4 to 5 hours. The cost of the tour is £60 (with a maximum of 10 participants per tour) or a four hour private tour can be booked for £400 (Please e-mail James for further details). Please note: Our Tours always go ahead whether we have one person booked or the maximum of ten people. Tours start in front of the National Monument on Calton Hill at the east end of Princes Street, access can be gained from Waterloo Place and you will always be tutored by James Christie.

Taking night time photos with James and his strobe light was fantastic. I would recommend this to everyone. Lighting up the various Closes with different colour filters provided delightful effects. Then experimenting with elongated shadows of the statues against the Royal Mile buildings was fun.

I recently got engaged it was a magical moment in my life that we now have captured all on camera thanks to James. We had met James on a photography Tour and my boyfriend starting plotting this amazing photo shoot idea. I didn't have a clue what was going on, all that I wanted was some lovely professional photos for... More

A great day with James. He challenged our thinking on using our camera and we will use manual mode from now on. Great tips on composition and all that combined with interesting historical snippets on Scottish history. The walk was also a great way to orientate ourselves. He also gave insight into the fascinating world of the professional photographer and... More

Fantastic way to spend a lovely crisp frosty Scottish day! Amazing historic facts learnt about Rosslyn and the Borders Abbeys, and much more important information on photography. I am well on my way to mastering manual on every aspect of photography. Loved the use of the lighting and fisheye lens. I can say I am officially hooked with photography. Would... More

On a cold winters day what better way to enjoy the beautiful city of Edinburgh with a fabulous walking photography tour. James is an excellent tour guide with plenty of tales to tell. The city comes alive with colour, shapes, shadows from behind your camera lens. We both enjoyed this experience immensely and feel we have gained much knowledge which... More

It has been years since I shot in manual mode & since my tour with James, I have control of my photographic results again. At various locations around the city, you will learn about settings and composition. Shoot and then James will critic your shot. If off from his goal, he will explain how to improve the shot and give... More

This tour was awesome! Not only did I get to learn a ton about Edinburgh, but I learned a lot about photography and took home some great photos. James is a fantastic guide -- tons of stories, history, and little trivia tidbits. He's the perfect person to show you this gorgeous city. I was so glad I booked this tour... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
