Captain's Bar has Scottish Folk music nightly in this historic and traditional bar in the old town. Close to the Royal Mile but a genuine Scottish bar where people appreciate talented musicians. Some nights are traditional singing - old folk songs and contemporary. Other nights are acoustic fiddle, guitar, flute and bagpipes. There are special folk sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The bar sells coffee and has wifi and a book exchange. Small seated area and the rest is standing area.

We had moved to the captains as the musicians at another pub had failed to impress. The Captains was a lot nicer with room for more people (just) and the young musicians were playing the jigs and reels we wanted to hear with impressive virtuosity. Very crowded, but everyone got on well. Don't go if you are claustrophobic! As a... More

Narrow bar with a table for live musicians at the back on the way to the loos. One dreams of finding these places where on a regular basis over the years we have experienced episodes of magic. Generally there are a group performing who welcome others to join in usually of high standard, its the eclectic mix which makes it... More

About a month ago myself and two other females who work in the law school were at this pub and we were being bothered by a drunk guy on his own. We very politely humoured him until he pulled up a chair and we said to him that we really wanted to continue our night without him. The female bar... More

During the fringe thus is on the walk between pleasance courtyard and dome so you pass it often. Pop in. Small but friendly. Great beers and live music. Love it.

Lovely little pub. Good choice of beers and lagers with friendly bar staff (and customers). Interesting pictures and adverts on walls - venue for live folk music, but none on the evening we visited. Think it must be on a list of quaint pubs to visit in Edinburgh as there were quite a few foreign visitors.

The Captains is small but filled with live music and good banter. They don't serve food but have a decent selection of beers with at least 2 local ones available. Good selection of whiskey which the staff are happy to advise on.

Stopped in for a pint one afternoon, great craft beer & conversation with the staff. She advised us to arrive early (8:30) for a good seat in the evening. We did and we were not disappointed! Great folk music, many different instruments. The other patrons were very friendly. Very warm & welcoming atmosphere!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
