I was very lucky to be in Edinburgh on monday night, when a big band night was on at the Jazz bar. You pay 5 pound at the door but it is worth the price, the music is amazing and the standing of the musician was second to none. Hey! Dont miss the skills of the bartender with the shaker!

Firstly I would like to say that I am not a jazz lover (I don’t mind it, but I am not a fan of it) so my review might not be helpful to the true lover of jazz. When we arrived we were told that there might be no spare tables as it was quite busy. We paid £6 per... More

World class jazz at affordable prices. This is a hidden gem in Edinburgh and a place even we locals forget about. Don't. It is superb and great value for money. No food available but a very good bar.

I Was recommended this place to go to listen to live music while on holiday. Arrived to a lovely atmosphere however when we went to the bar to order a bottle of Prosecco they informed us they had forgotten to chill their bottles and they were all warm. I decided to then pay more and have a bottle of champagne... More

Not just for jazz fans, this venue is lively, warm and inviting as soon as you head downstairs from the road. We went on Christmas Eve and it was excellent. Music was great. Bar prices were average and no higher than others around

A really fabulous jazz group who played New Orleans style. I shall definitely visit again. It is a shame they don't serve food or even more substantial snacks.

Went two days in a row. On Thursday it was nice and chill, although after 11.00 the people were not that many. On Friday it was a fantastic atmosphere, with very cool bands, packed with people that enjoyed the music or danced even at 1 am that we left. The drink prices are also pretty ok, apart from the fact... More

The Jazz Bar is a great venue for catching some live jazz. Live music is available every day. Most of the earlier gigs in the day are all free, with the ones that are later in the evening attracting a small entry fee. On a Saturday afternoon there is an excellent trio called the Mellowtomes who are great. This basement... More

Been meaning to drop in here for years, just never got round to it. We visited early on a Saturday afternoon, entrance was free, a trio were playing an eclectic mix of jazz and Latin american. There were silver haired ladies having coffee and young chaps drinking cocktails. Don't be put off by the frontage or the steep stair. If... More

Excellent location if you like live music, we arrived at 6.00 pm, live music until 3 am even on a Tuesday night. Jam session with singers and musicians from around the World. Will definately go again.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
