The Edinburgh Military tattoo is an annual series of Military tattoos performed at the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams. This is held during the month of August each year which coincides with the Fringe Festival and International Festival. This really is a must when visiting Edinburgh and really provides for the experience of a lifetime. Dress warmly for the outdoors as the seating in the esplanade is uncovered.

We bought a dinner package at the Jacobite Room. It is in the castle, so you are kind of behind the scenes. We went outside during the dinner and watched the bands warm up.The package was great because you go in 2 hours before the...More

At 58 years young, I'd waited for this moment since I was a kid growing up in New Zealand. I was not disappointed! The atmosphere and the performances were outstanding, and the Lone Piper was just as emotional as I thought it would be. Having...More

An experience not to be missed. This was our second visit to the Tattoo, and we enjoyed every minute of it. I'd suggest that the later show is best, because it doesn't get dark until after 8pm (our show began at 9pm). If you go...More

We booked tickets rather late and could only get tickets in the lower section. I would recommend booking early and getting tickets that are facing the castle, well worth it. An amazing experience with less bagpipes than I expected, but that didn't make it less...More

A truly amazing experience. The online ticketing was smooth. The entrance on the day was in an orderly manner, getting out of there wasn't hectic at all, considering there were loads of people. Was in the second best section (section 9 I think) without regrets....More

WOW, this was unbelievable to see, well worth the wait. Go early so you can get in sooner, everything was well controlled. All the seats taken, I believe 60k can be seated. Enjoyed the fireworks. A must go!

I used to watch the Tattoo on TV with my parents when I was a kid, but work and other commitments stopped me from attending in later life. The event was put on my post-retirement bucket list, though, and we attended this year. In short,...More

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

It can be quite cold at night at the castle, and there is always the chance of rain. It is worth remembering that only the Royal Gallery is covered, and we have never cancelled a show in 68 years!
