The Tenement House provides a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century, in the faithfully restored four-room house lived in by Miss Agnes Toward for over half a century. See what it meant to be an 'independent woman' in the first half of the 20th century; experience how ordinary folk lived, and appreciate how many of the household amenities we now take for granted were considered luxuries less than a century ago. Authentic gas lighting has been installed to recreate the atmosphere of the house, which didn't have electric lighting until 1960. An exhibition on the ground floor makes the most of Miss Toward's extensive personal archive, providing a valuable time capsule for visitors today.

A must

This is a must on a visit to Glasgow. Really atmospheric. Doesn't look much from outside but is well worth seeing.

The house gives a fascinating insight into bygone times. I truly felt transported back into that era. It is full of authentic items of interest. Well worth a visit.

Not sure why museums are closed during the whole winter - but this was and was definitely disappointed.

See what Glasgow life must have been like more than a century ago when whole families shared a room and a kitchen. A real eye-opener.

My grandmother grew up in Glasgow and by visiting the Tenement House, my mom and I got a glimpse into what life was like when she was a young woman in Glasgow. The staff was very engaged and knowledgeable.

Run by the National Trust Scotland, I thought the entrance fee a bit high. You visit just four rooms, but all are well furnished in the 1930's period. Staff are available in each room and explain very well the history of the flat and the previous occupant. So overall the cost is justified. The house is only open in the... More

See how life used to be lived in the old 'Glesca' tenement, this reminds me of my Gran's house in old Govan. Whole family's used to live in these cramped accommodations, throughout Glasgow where everyone knew their neighbours and their neighbours knew them.

I loved the afternoon I spent here, there were so many things I remembered from when I was a child and a few which had to be explained to me by the helpful staff. Be warned its a busy place, it was a bit of a squeeze at times, however this didn't detract from my sheer enjoyment of the place.... More
