Heritage marred

Could have benefited from some informative signs, some signposting or anything really. Unfortunately it was full of rubbish from previous visitors.

Interesting Historical Ruined Church
Sep. 2020
Ruined church dedicated to St Peter and once the principal church of Caithness administered by the Bishop of Caithness and a rival to Dornoch cathedral. Thought to have been built near a Viking/Norse burial ground the much extended and multiperiod church near the River Thurso has a replica runestone built into the tower of the church highlighting the town's Norse heritage. The original stone is in the now sadly closed Thurso Museum. The church or Kirk is in need of restoration and interpretation but is well worth a visit although you can only walk around the outside

Old and neglected
Aug. 2019
There is not much left of this old building and you cannot go inside as it is locked off. You can however wander through the graveyard and read the old headstones which was interesting

Dates Back to Middle Ages
Jun. 2019 • Friends
One of the first stops on our tour was Old St. Peter’s Kirk (church) in Thurso. The remains of what was once one of the best religious buildings from the Middle Ages. Today most of it is in ruins except for the window that was carved out of a single slab of stone. You can also see where lepers sat during services. There is a wall with hooks used to secure sinners for a length of time depending on their sin. This wall bore the brunt of the bitter cold winds. In one corner is a watch house built to deter body snatchers who sold corpses to medical schools. Some of the marker stones in the church graveyard show skulls, crossbones, angels as well as emblems representing the deceased individual’s trade.

Interesting to visit the church and graveyard which had details of church history on display, However so much more could be made of this site such as allowing entry into the church builkdings.

My wife's family are from Thurso so we visited this church ruins & saw an ancient headstone with the family name BUT who knows if it was the same McIntosh clan?? The ruins & graveyard are very interesting & ancient. Last service here was in the 1400's so this church is the oldest in northern Scotland. BTW, it's free.

Lovely unexpected stop-off in Thurso

Came to this ruin after visiting Caithness Horizons Museum, and loved the ambiance. It’s a beautiful and unexpected landmark, interesting to examine and walk around. Certainly worth the short visit if you are in the town centre of Thurso.
