Elcho Castle is one of Scotland's best-preserved 16th-century tower houses. It was built around the time of the Protestant Reformation in 1560 by a member of the family of Wemyss of that Ilk. The family could trace their lineage back to the 12th century. A descendant of the builder of Elcho was created Lord Wemyss of Elcho in 1628 and Earl of Wemyss in 1633.

What a gem of a find. Worth going off the beaten track to discover. A very well preserved and presented Historic Scotland property. Should be better promoted but there are no brochures on this specific property. Children would love the many rooms and areas to explore and imagine themselves back in the days!!!I have never seen so many "historic facilities"... More

I went to Scotland for the castles and history but my wife prefers gardens. Elcho Castle did an excellent job in presenting its history and that of Scotland. It also is situated next to a beautiful body of water and has a nice path with flowers leading down toward the water. Highly recommend Elcho Castle!!

Phone ahead to check opening before travelling to this castle. We have been disappointed more than once. We visited april 4th 2017 to find the castle closed (later found out staff member off sick) last summer we visited late afternoon and hoped to stay to advertised finish time 5pm but we were asked to leave early as only us there... This castle is a hidden gem and well worth a visit. It's a bit off the beaten track, however it's incredibly well preserved and there are lots of 'nooks and crannies' to explore. The staff were also very helpful and well informed. We would definitely go back.

Fantastic 15th century tower house right next to the Tay. Driven by this area many a time and never knew it was here. Definitely worth a look, lovely castle in an ideal setting for a family picnic and day out. Historic Scotland staff fantastic as usual.

My husband and I visited on our self drive road trip around Scotland in August 2016, after a recommendation from the wonderful lady at St. Serf's Church. Elcho castle is easy to find if you use the postcode not the address in the GPS, you pass through old farms into the wonderful grounds of this old stone castle. Compared to... More

Recently visited the castle and was impressed with this little hidden gem! Ideal if you have a small adventurer or explorer and wanting to kill an hour or two! Was a beautiful day when we visited and made the most of the grounds around the castle! Isnt all that much too see but the little quiz keeps kids interested in... More

Kept driving past it for 20 years. It was a sunny morning and we decided to have a look. What a surprise. Although it is a ruin there is a lot to see and the detail on the story boards is spot on. There are great views of the Tay. If you like castles this is well worth a visit
