About
Perth Art Gallery is open Thursday to Monday (please check opening hours). As part of the phased approach to the reopened galleries, visitors will be able to explore the Modern Scots, our new permanent displays, as we tell the story of influential modern Scottish artists and their contribution to 20th and 21st century art. The works on display cover the last 100 years and demonstrate the new and innovative ways in which Scottish artists were working and taking inspiration from the past and from Europe. The exhibition includes key players in the story of Scottish art, such as Joan Eardley and Sir William MacTaggart, alongside renowned contemporary artists Calum Colvin and Alison Watt. The gallery is also home to the popular family area, Messy Museum, as well as the shop, coffee bar and toilets. Perth Art Gallery will become the new home to the Fergusson Collection later this year, allowing more space to display works by JD Fergusson and Margaret Morris and greater accessibility.

The galleries are lit sympathetically and there is plenty of space to view the exhibits. I was most struck by the professionalism of two young curators a woman and man. Several pictures displayed unicorns. I asked a young man to explain to me the significance of these beasts which he did but incompletely. He quickly found another young curator and roped her in to explain a little bit more. She did. Apart from their enthusiasm and depth of knowledge I was moved by their care for me. They presumed neither that I was a complete dunce who was just interested in weird beasts, nor someone who was into the ins and outs of Zebra-ology. Both seemed to b a sensitive of my ‘level’ of existing knowledge. In other words they were both careful to build on what I knew rather than just unloading into my brain a.handy bucketful of stuff about unicorns. The gallery is lucky to have them - and so are we.

Just two rooms. Very sparse. Needs to open up more quickly and get more on display. Such a disappointment.

Popped in as we found ourselves at a loose end in Perth. Was wonderful to see a lovely building redecorated in a unique and innovative way was lovely. Loved the kids area, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Loved the young Scot's collection, great that a local charity is doing so much for the community and raising awareness of diversity. Also liked the historical awareness, was great for all the family.

this is a smallish museum but definitely worth a visit for anyone with time to spend in museum. Enjoyed the natural life exhibits and a special exhibition on a now lost local community.

Delighted with this peaceful and welcoming place. The collection is not large, but it is of high quality and very well presented. The older oil paintings in particular (starting with Cranach) are very well lit indeed, and may be enjoyed in their full splendour. The areas devoted to wildlife and geology are also very well done. Some of the material is appropriately interactive - for instance, you can touch particular switches and the sounds made by particular animals are emitted. The shop area and café are also pleasant. Admission is free, and for anyone in the vicinity I would commend the Museum very highly. All in all we were left with very positive impressions and will be glad to return.

Excellent story-telling for this part of Scotland. The complicated geology of Perthshire and Kinross is explained well. Great selection of childrens' pocket-money ideas in the gift shop. Before planning a visit, check on which days it is open. Free to get in, but if you enjoyed your stay, there's a banknote donation box awaiting you when you leave.

Can't really complain given that it's free, but not a huge amount to see inside and not much of a visitor journey through the museum. Worth a look if you're nearby though.
