You can feel another civilisation here. The location on a hill top gives it a magical quality. If it's a blustery day be prepared to fight the wind. Take your photo's from the bottom of the site looking uphill then you don't get houses in the background. The site is having turf repairs. This is a price you pay for... More

Amazing to see and in a beautiful setting. Cafe and shop also good. Museum small but okay. Mark knocked off purely for the ongoing turf work which meant you couldn't get right up to the main area of stones. The cones blocking this area off aren't great for the view either!

Unfortunately we visited on a Sunday when it was raining. The Visitor Centre was closed but the toilets were open. Such a bonus. The stones are stunning but spoiled somewhat as others have said by the orange cones. Good they are maintaining the site though.

Wow. You stand there and think to yourself how many have come and stood there before you. Aside from trying to figure out how they could be moved to set up those stones, it is a place to stop and take deep breaths and take in the beauty.

Certainly interesting to visit the Stones and wander about the site and to read the history. However.... I agree that maintenance needs to be carried out to preserve the site. But could it be done in a way that retains the authenticity of the site and not distract the visitors experience. I understand the roped areas but orange and white... More

We visited the stones a couple of times on our trip to the Isle of lewis. The cafe in the visitor centre was the nicest place we found to eat on our trip. The stones themselves were very interesting to see but the traffic cones and tape around them was slightly off putting. We really enjoyed seeing them and would... More

Very good but there was some sort of reconstruction / tidying up work going on so some of the stones were being held together by ropes and there were traffic cones zoning off one part so it took away some authenticity from our photos. ( I know that sounds selfish !!)

I came all the way up to the Isle of Lewis because I wanted to enjoy this ancient site. I've been to Stonehenge, which is unique, and I found that a mystical atmosphere pervaded the place. Unfortunately nothing of this happened today and that was probably for two reasons. The weather was awful, it kept raining all the time and... More

Words are truly inadequate to describe this ethereal place on Earth-- it is like a cross between places, time and space where humans and cosmic beings converge, whispering tales to one another... It is a must-experience once in a lifetime, if you go to Scotland. It is worth taking a special trip to the isle of Lewis just for this!... More
